The president of the Ghana Football Association Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has rallied the Black Starlets to rise to the occasion and make Ghana proud at the upcoming 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, delivering a passionate charge ahead of the team’s departure.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) President met the squad in the early hours of Wednesday at the Kotoka International Airport, where he personally bid farewell to the players and technical team. His presence highlighted the significance of the tournament and reinforced belief in the squad’s readiness to compete at the highest level.
Addressing the team, Simeon-Okraku described their qualification as a major milestone after years of absence from the continental competition.
He stressed that their return represents more than just participation, calling it the beginning of a broader resurgence in Ghanaian football.
“For years, we have not been able to qualify for the AFCON. But you have done it this time. This year is a year of turnaround for Ghana football and it starts with you. I have absolute confidence in this team, the quality your technical team has put together and all the preparations you have gone through. Don’t just go and qualify for the World Cup, but also put Ghana back where we belong by winning it. Believe in yourself and you can do it.”

A Defining Moment for Ghana’s Youth Football Revival
The GFA President challenged the Black Starlets to aim higher and reclaim Ghana’s status as a powerhouse in youth football on the continent. He further reminded the players of the weight of national expectation and the legacy they inherit whenever they don the Ghana jersey.
According to him, representing the country goes beyond individual ambition and demands collective responsibility and pride.
“You are carrying the hopes of millions of Ghanaians. When you step onto that pitch, remember that you are not alone—an entire nation stands behind you.”

Ghana boasts a rich history at youth level, having produced generations of talented players who have excelled both in Africa and on the global stage. Simeon-Okraku urged the current squad to draw inspiration from that tradition while writing their own chapter of success.

He also expressed unwavering confidence in the technical team, noting that their preparation and tactical guidance will play a crucial role in the team’s performance in Morocco. Discipline, unity, and adherence to instructions, he emphasized, will be essential ingredients for success.
“The technical team has done its part, and I trust their guidance. Listen to them, stay disciplined, and play for each other. Success will follow if you remain focused and united.”

In a final rallying call, the GFA boss encouraged the players to approach every game with courage and belief, regardless of the opposition. He stressed that mental strength and determination could make the difference in tight encounters.
“Go out there with courage, play with pride, and never be afraid of any opponent.” Ghana has a rich history in youth football, and it is your time to write the next chapter. Make the nation proud.”

He also delivered a simple but powerful reminder about resilience and perseverance, adding, “It’s never over until it’s over.”
The Black Starlets have since departed for Morocco, where they have been drawn into a challenging group. Finding themselves in in Group D, Ghana will compete against Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa, with their tournament set to kick off on May 14.
The AFCON tournament will also serve as qualification path to the FIFA U-17 World Cup where 10 African representatives will be selected. The top two from each of the four groups will secure an automatic spot at the World Cup with the third placed teams battling off in a playoff series to determine the final two.
