Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben South in the Eastern Region, has made known that Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would be a good President if elected by the electorate in the 2024 general election.

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker divulged that, looking at the impressive credentials of the Vice President, there is no doubt that he would make a good President.

“I think he has paid his dues, you understand. When we look at how our numbers have gone up in the Northern Region, we are at par with the NDC, each of the parties has 9 seats.

“Even in the Savanna Region, the NPP have four seats, whereas the NDC also have 3. In North East, we have three and the NDC has four. Overall, in the three regions of the north, the New Patriotic Party has 16 and the National Democratic Congress has 15.”

In the words of Dr Assibey Yeboah, “There was a time that the NPP had 3 seats but now we have 16 and the NDC has 15; the old Northern Region, as it were. Dr Bawumia has done his bit and even though the delegates will decide, for me when I look at his CV, I think that he will be a good President.”

Asked if he thought Dr Bawumia would be a better fit than Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Dr Assibey-Yeboah opined that either of them would do well, but if he looks at Dr Bawumia’s credentials, he would be a better flagbearer for the party as he is ahead of Mr Alan Kyerematen.

Alan, Bawumia Tie In NPP Flagbearership Race

Meanwhile, a new national poll conducted by the Global InfoAnalytics revealed that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, are at par in the race to lead the party ahead of the 2024 elections.

The polls conducted between 31st December 2022 and 15th January 2023, show the race to lead the NPP is a dead heat among NPP voters as Dr Bawumia has lost the slender lead he enjoyed in October 2022 over Mr Kyeremanten. The poll now shows Dr Bawumia and Mr Kyerematen are levelled at 40% apiece among NPP voters.

However, the New Patriotic Party is yet to set a date for its Presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

Mr Kyerematen, who resigned from his post is likely to face off with the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and former Railways Minister, Joe Ghartey, who has also declared his intention to contest for the slot. NPP supporters are yet to officially hear from Hon Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who it is alleged, is also interested in the position.

The poll shows the President’s job approval rating making a significant recovery from 26% in October, leaping to 32% in January 2023, whilst his disapproval declined sharply from 69% in October to 59% in January 2023.

According to the General Secretary of the party, Mr Justin Frimpong Kodua, guidelines for the primaries would be made public on Tuesday January 31, this year. The guidelines are to ensure free, fair and transparent processes, so that at the end of the day, those who will lose the Presidential as well as parliamentary primaries will know that they lost in a fair contest.

Although the National Council of the party is yet to fix a date and venue for the Presidential and parliamentary primaries, the aspirants are not leaving anything to chance as they criss-cross the country to enable them to win the slot.
