Samuel Abu Jinapor

The proposal for collaboration on nature-based climate solutions presented by Mundo Verde Climate, a Swiss-based company focused on carbon credit development and trading, has been warmly received by the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio.

Recognizing the potential mutual benefits, Hon. Benito expressed his enthusiasm for the comprehensive nature of the proposal, highlighting its capacity to not only benefit Ghana as a nation but also positively impact the lives of the communities residing within the forest peripheries.

During the delegation’s extensive presentation on Wednesday, 25th October 2023, Hon. Benito, speaking on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts in aggressive afforestation.

He lauded the proposal’s potential to augment these efforts and contribute to the global fight against climate change. Additionally, considering the far-reaching impact of the project, Hon. Benito recommended the exploration of collaboration with private plantation owners, suggesting an expansion of the project’s scope for broader benefits.

Expressing gratitude to the delegation, Hon. Benito proposed a meeting with the Forestry Commission to discuss the next steps in adopting the project, emphasizing the potential benefits for the Ministry and the government as a whole.

The leader of the delegation and Managing Partner of Mundo Verde Climate, in her detailed presentation, underlined the organization’s interest in establishing carbon sink areas in Ghana through the protection and regeneration of degraded forests and mangroves. Stressing the prerequisites for successful collaboration, she outlined the need for land access, project partnership concessions, local expertise, and a cooperative environment.

Madam Kaya, the Managing Partner, further underscored the project’s potential to bring significant benefits to Ghana, including employment opportunities, and improved infrastructure such as hospitals, roads, and schools, among others. The Technical Director for Forestry at the Ministry, Mr. Joseph Osiakwan, shed light on existing and potential mangrove areas for investment by the company, mentioning coastal regions like the Keta Lagoon, the Ada Songor, and other notable sites.

Moreover, he drew attention to other areas of interest, including Avoided Deforestation Investments and Wood Lots Establishments, emphasizing the Ministry’s eagerness for prompt action, citing previous instances where similar proposals had not materialized.

Dr. John Krugu, the Coordinator for the Ghana Landscape Restoration & Small Scale Mining Project (GLRSSMP), was also present during the meeting with the Deputy Minister, underscoring the multifaceted potential for collaboration and development in Ghana’s forestry sector.
