The Lure Of Electoral Justice: NDC Pledges Closure To 2020 Poll Victims

Greater Accra NDC Eyes Five More Seats

In a bold and unequivocal yet usual declaration, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to seek justice for the eight lives lost during the 2020 general elections in Ghana.

The party’s Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, addressing the media at the party’s headquarters, made it clear that if the NDC secures power, they will relentlessly pursue and punish those responsible for the deaths.

As Ghana commemorates 31 years of the 1992 Constitution that restored democratic governance, the NDC’s promise to deliver justice stands as a poignant commitment to upholding the principles upon which the nation was built.

“Let me assure you – as we commemorate 31 years of the 1992 Constitution that restored Ghana to democratic governance – that, the next NDC government shall deliver justice to all the victims of this government’s misrule.

“We shall go after the perpetrators who murdered the eight Ghanaians during the 2020 elections. We shall find the perpetrators. And we shall punish the perpetrators when we win power on December 7 this year.”

The party’s leadership, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, has expressed its determination to hold accountable those involved in what Mahama described as using “thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies” to disrupt elections.

The eight lives lost during the 2020 elections cast a dark shadow on Ghana’s democratic journey. Commissioner of Police (COP) Isaac Ken Yeboah revealed in a press conference that the casualties included three minors and occurred in various locations, such as Tamale, Techiman, Odorkor, Ablekuma, and Savelugu. These incidents underscore the need for a thorough investigation and accountability to restore faith in the electoral process.

John Dramani Mahama’s statement, issued on the occasion of Ghana’s Fourth Republic anniversary, highlighted not only the tragic loss of life but also the absence of empathy from President Nana Akufo-Addo. Mahama criticized the president for not expressing sympathy to the bereaved families, emphasizing the moral responsibility of leadership during such challenging times.

The NDC’s commitment to justice is grounded in the belief that electoral malpractices, violence, and loss of life have no place in a thriving democracy. The pledge to investigate and punish those responsible for the deaths is not merely a political maneuver but a fundamental assertion of the values that underpin Ghana’s democracy.

The pursuit of justice for the victims of the 2020 elections represents more than a promise; it symbolizes a call for accountability and a rejection of any attempts to undermine the democratic process. By addressing the alleged involvement of “thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies,” the NDC seeks to root out systemic issues that could compromise the integrity of future elections.

However, the NDC’s vow raises questions about the politicization of justice. While justice should be blind, impartial, and fair, the inherent nature of electoral promises may lead to skepticism regarding the sincerity of the commitment. The electorate, media, and civil society must scrutinize the implementation of this promise to ensure that justice is pursued objectively, without partisan bias.

In a broader context, the NDC’s call for justice reflects a growing global concern about the erosion of democratic norms and the rise of electoral violence. Ghana, known for its stable democracy, faces the challenge of maintaining the integrity of its electoral processes. The NDC’s commitment becomes a beacon, not just for Ghanaians, but for democracies worldwide grappling with similar issues.

As Ghana approaches the December 7 election date, the electorate must weigh the significance of the NDC’s promise for justice against the broader backdrop of democratic values. The call for electoral justice should transcend party lines, serving as a collective endeavor to strengthen and protect the democratic fabric that binds the nation together.

The pursuit of justice must be rigorous, transparent, and free from political influence to ensure it serves as a true testament to the nation’s commitment to upholding democratic principles.
