KIC Leads the Charge in Empowering Youth Startups and Agri-MSMEs at Upcoming AIA Conference

The Kosmos Innovation Centre (KIC) is set to host the second edition of the Agricultural Innovation for Africa (AIA) Conference on August 28 and 29, 2024, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

This year’s conference, under the theme “Empowering Youth Startups and Agri-MSMEs in Africa: Addressing Climate Change, Innovative Financing, Market Efficiency, and Gender Mainstreaming for Sustainable Food Systems,” aims to provide a platform for meaningful discussions on how to engage and empower young people within Africa’s agricultural value chain.

The AIA Conference is more than just an event; it is a call to action for stakeholders across the agricultural sector to collaborate and create inclusive pathways that support youth startups, agri-MSMEs, and entrepreneurs. The focus of the conference is on climate resilience, innovative financing, market linkages, and gender mainstreaming—key areas that are critical for driving sustainable food systems in Africa.

Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Executive Director of KIC, emphasized the significance of the AIA Conference in fostering collaboration and innovation within Africa’s agricultural sector.

“The AIA Conference underscores KIC’s commitment to harnessing innovation and collaboration to address the challenges and opportunities in Africa’s agricultural sector. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, we aim to inspire actionable solutions and foster a sustainable future for agriculture in Africa.”

The conference promises to bring together a diverse array of players from across the agricultural sector, including policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and representatives from startup ecosystems. These stakeholders will engage in interactive panel sessions designed to inspire thought-provoking conversations on sustainable and innovative practices that can elevate Africa’s agricultural potential.

Focus on Climate Resilience and Market Efficiency

One of the key themes of the AIA Conference is climate resilience. With the increasing impacts of climate change on agriculture, there is a growing need for innovative solutions that can help farmers and agri-businesses adapt and thrive. The conference will explore strategies for building climate resilience, including the adoption of sustainable farming practices, the use of technology to monitor and mitigate climate risks, and the development of climate-smart agricultural policies.

In addition to climate resilience, the conference will also focus on market efficiency. Efficient markets are essential for ensuring that agricultural products can reach consumers in a timely and cost-effective manner. The AIA Conference will explore ways to improve market linkages, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance the overall efficiency of agricultural value chains in Africa.

Innovative financing is another critical area of focus for the AIA Conference. Access to finance remains a major challenge for many youth startups and agri-MSMEs in Africa. The conference will provide a platform for discussing innovative financing solutions, including the use of digital financial services, impact investing, and blended finance models. These discussions will aim to identify ways to unlock new sources of capital for youth startups and agri-MSMEs, helping them to scale and grow their businesses.

Gender mainstreaming is also a key theme of the conference. Women play a vital role in agriculture in Africa, yet they often face significant barriers to participation and success. The AIA Conference will explore strategies for promoting gender equality in the agricultural sector, including the provision of targeted support for women entrepreneurs, the development of gender-sensitive policies, and the creation of inclusive value chains.

In addition to the panel sessions, the AIA Conference will feature several other events designed to provide opportunities for networking and growth. The Deal Room will offer a platform for startups and agri-MSMEs to pitch their businesses to potential investors, while the Exhibition will showcase cutting-edge technologies and solutions designed to enhance efficiency and sustainability within the agricultural sector.

The Youth Career Fair, organized in collaboration with Jobberman Ghana and in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation and Agri-Impact Limited, will provide employability skills training for young people and link job seekers to employers within the agriculture and adjacent sectors.
