Ewoyaa Project: Atlantic Lithium Limited

The Minerals Commission of Ghana has officially issued the Mine Operating Permit, granting the company the necessary approval to begin construction of the project.

Atlantic Lithium Limited (AIM: ALL, ASX: A11, GSE: ALLGH, OTCQX: ALLIF), a leading Africa-focused lithium exploration and development company, announced this major regulatory milestone for its flagship Ewoyaa Lithium Project in Ghana.

The Ewoyaa Lithium Project, located in the Central Region of Ghana, has garnered global attention as it is set to become Ghana’s first lithium-producing mine. In a statement, Neil Herbert, Executive Chairman of Atlantic Lithium, expressed his excitement about this significant development.

“Representing the final regulatory approval required by the Company before we can commence construction, the issuance of the Mine Operating Permit marks a critical milestone in the permitting process for the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.”

The issuance of the Mine Operating Permit is a landmark moment for both Atlantic Lithium and the broader mining industry in Ghana. It signals the government’s confidence in the project and the company’s ability to meet stringent environmental and operational standards.

This permit allows Atlantic Lithium to begin the detailed work necessary for constructing the mining infrastructure.

According to Neil Herbert, the company will now proceed with finalizing construction designs and setting up operations on-site, paving the way for production. The Ewoyaa Project is expected to become a major contributor to the growing global demand for lithium, a critical mineral used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and renewable energy storage solutions.

The company also highlighted that it is now awaiting parliamentary ratification of the Ewoyaa Mining Lease, a critical step needed before construction can formally begin. Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on October 15, 2024, and Atlantic Lithium remains hopeful that the ratification will occur during this session.

Progress Toward Lithium Production

The Ewoyaa Lithium Project is not only a milestone for Atlantic Lithium but also for Ghana, as it seeks to establish itself as a key player in the global lithium supply chain.

Lithium is a vital resource in the production of batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems, and demand for it is projected to rise sharply in the coming decades as the world moves toward cleaner energy solutions.

“With our sights set on achieving first production of lithium in Ghana, we now eagerly await parliamentary ratification of the Ewoyaa Mining Lease.

“We hope that ratification can occur in the coming sitting, expected to resume on the 15th of this month, which would set us on the path towards construction and operation of this globally significant lithium project.”

Neil Herbert, Executive Chairman of Atlantic Lithium

Atlantic Lithium’s Ewoyaa Project, with an estimated production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate per year, is positioned to play a key role in this burgeoning industry. With the company now securing the Mine Operating Permit, the path toward becoming a significant global lithium producer is clearer.

The project’s development is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Ghana, creating hundreds of jobs and contributing to the nation’s revenue streams through royalties, taxes, and export earnings.

While the Mine Operating Permit is a significant achievement, Atlantic Lithium must secure one final hurdle—the ratification of the Ewoyaa Mining Lease by the Ghanaian parliament. The company has expressed confidence that this final approval will be granted soon, marking the official start of construction.

With only the parliamentary ratification of the Mining Lease remaining, the path forward for Atlantic Lithium is now clear. Should ratification be secured in the coming weeks, construction could begin as early as the first quarter of 2025, with production targeted for the following year.

For Ghana, the Ewoyaa Project represents a critical opportunity to establish itself as a player in the global energy transition, creating economic benefits while contributing to the worldwide drive for sustainable, green technologies.
