The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana, under the leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Delese Mimi Darko has announced its active participation in the ninth annual #MedSafetyWeek.
This global initiative, held from November 4th to 10th, 2024, aims to raise awareness about the critical role of reporting side effects associated with medication. This year’s campaign, themed “Responsible Use of Medicines to Prevent and Report Side Effects,” unites 105 organizations across 92 countries to encourage safe medication practices and active patient participation in safeguarding public health.
In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer of the FDA emphasized the campaign’s relevance, stating that “medications are essential for treating diseases, but they can sometimes produce adverse side effects. Reporting these effects promptly can help prevent serious injury and improve healthcare safety for all.”
The FDA noted that it’s committed to equipping Ghanaians with the knowledge and tools necessary to report side effects, thereby improving the safe use of medications across the country.
While medications are designed to treat a range of health conditions, it is well-documented that they may also cause unintended side effects. These adverse reactions can range from mild symptoms, such as nausea and dizziness, to severe outcomes, including organ damage or allergic reactions.
According to FDA data, the risks associated with medication can be significantly reduced if patients adhere to prescribed dosages and instructions. Nevertheless, unexpected reactions may still occur, making it crucial for individuals to report any adverse effects as soon as they arise.
The FDA’s participation in #MedSafetyWeek aligns with its mission to protect public health by mitigating medication risks through proactive safety monitoring and public education.
The FDA issued a call to action for all Ghanaians to become vigilant and proactive about their health, emphasizing that side effect reporting is a shared responsibility between healthcare providers, patients, and regulatory authorities.
Over the years, the FDA has received numerous reports from patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. These contributions have significantly contributed to creating a safer healthcare environment.
The agency emphasized that every piece of information counts in maintaining high standards of medication safety.
Encouraging Ghanaians to Report Side Effects
Throughout #MedSafetyWeek, the FDA is urging all Ghanaians—patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals alike—to participate actively in reporting side effects.
With continued public engagement, the FDA hopes to foster a culture of proactive reporting, where everyone understands the importance of promptly addressing medication safety concerns.
“Public health safety is our top priority. Reporting adverse reactions helps us better understand the safety profile of medications available on the Ghanaian market, and it enables us to make informed regulatory decisions to protect patients.”
Delese Mimi Darko, Chief Executive Officer of the FDA
As part of the #MedSafetyWeek campaign, the FDA has launched a public outreach initiative under the slogan, “Your Well-being, Our Priority.” This initiative seeks to remind the public of the FDA’s commitment to enhancing medicine safety and protecting patient health.
The FDA called on all Ghanaians to embrace the message of #MedSafetyWeek. By responsibly using medications and reporting any adverse effects, the public can play a critical role in building a safer, healthier future.
As the FDA pledges its continued support for patient safety, this year’s campaign stands as a reminder that everyone has a role in safeguarding public health.
