The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a scheduled regional maintenance programme targeting key substations across the Ashanti Region from June 12 to June 27, 2025.

The initiative, led by ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission team, aims to reinforce the power distribution infrastructure and ensure a more stable and uninterrupted electricity supply to residential, commercial, and industrial consumers.

The planned maintenance will involve critical upgrades and cleaning of switchgear and transformers at three major substations: Kaase Main D, KTI Main G, and Fawode Main W. These substations serve thousands of customers and are considered vital to the region’s power reliability.

“This maintenance prioritises proactive system care over reactive interventions.

“Our goal is to ensure long-term asset health, minimise system downtime, and ultimately give our customers the consistent power supply they deserve.”

Ing. Edem Agra, Manager of Substations and Switchgear Maintenance at ECG

While the maintenance works are underway, brief scheduled outages are expected in areas served by the affected substations.

ECG assured the public that these interruptions will be managed efficiently, with round-the-clock efforts to restore service swiftly and safely.

General Manager for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter K. Fletcher, emphasized the strategic value of the project.

“This is more than wires and transformers. It’s a promise to our customers—to prevent outages before they happen, reduce system strain, and ensure a more robust power network that supports homes, industries, and businesses alike.”

The initiative forms part of ECG’s broader commitment to ensuring a resilient, future-ready energy grid, particularly in high-growth regions like Ashanti, where demand for electricity is surging due to urban expansion, industrialization, and digital connectivity.

The maintenance programme aligns with ECG’s annual strategic plan, which focuses on asset health, predictive maintenance, and infrastructure renewal.

According to ECG, proactive maintenance helps prevent costly emergency repairs, improves operational efficiency, and extends the lifespan of vital grid components.

“We maintain it today to prevent the outage tomorrow. The goal is not just to fix problems but to anticipate and avoid them altogether.

“This approach ensures long-term reliability and better service for every customer.”

Collins Manu, Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission

The team noted that ECG engineers will be on the ground during the maintenance period, equipped with the tools and resources needed to complete tasks on time while ensuring safety and minimal inconvenience to residents and businesses.

Public Engagement and Transparency

ECG is actively engaging communities through local radio announcements, town hall briefings, and public notices to ensure consumers are aware of the timelines and possible impacts of the maintenance schedule.

The company is also deploying mobile teams to assist with customer concerns and provide timely updates during the maintenance period.

“Transparent communication and public trust are central to this operation.

“We understand that even brief outages can affect people’s lives and livelihoods. That’s why we’re doing everything possible to make the process smooth, predictable, and worthwhile.”

Ing. Peter K. Fletcher, General Manager for Ashanti Sub-Transmission

He added that ECG remains committed to improving customer service delivery, reducing downtime, and building a power infrastructure capable of supporting national development goals, including Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda.

The Ashanti Region, one of Ghana’s economic powerhouses, has experienced both population growth and increased industrial activity in recent years.

With these developments comes greater pressure on existing grid infrastructure. ECG’s maintenance exercise is a step towards easing that pressure and preparing the grid for future growth.

This latest intervention builds on earlier efforts by ECG to digitize its operations, expand smart metering coverage, and integrate modern grid monitoring technologies.

“We are investing in infrastructure and innovation to stay ahead of demand and reduce service interruptions.

“This is a long-term commitment to our customers, and we will continue to improve the system one project at a time.”

Ing. Edem Agra, Manager of Substations and Switchgear Maintenance at ECG

The company encouraged residents in affected areas to stay informed through ECG’s official communication channels and to report any prolonged service issues during the maintenance period.
