Helicopter Crash: Challenging Heights Urges Full rCOMSDE Implementation to Honour Victims

Child rights organisation Challenging Heights has called on the government to fully implement the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDE) in memory of the eight officials who died in Wednesday’s fatal Ghana Air Force helicopter crash near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

The crash claimed the lives of, among others, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Honourable Alhaji Dr. Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

The officials were travelling to the launch of the rCOMSDE initiative, designed to curb illegal mining and promote sustainable economic alternatives.  For Challenging Heights, the tragedy underscores the urgency of confronting the scourge of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, with unwavering commitment.

“This tragic loss of lives, while en route to the launch of the anti-illegal mining initiative, serves as a stark reminder of the need for urgent action against illegal mining.”

Challenging Heights warned that the impact of galamsey reaches far beyond the visible destruction of land and waterways. It pointed to widespread child exploitation in mining communities, where children endure “back-breaking work, handle toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide without protection, and suffer from chronic respiratory illnesses, mercury poisoning, and long-term disabilities.”

Emotional and Psychological Scars

The organisation added that these children often carry deep emotional and psychological scars and, without access to education, remain trapped in a cycle of poverty. The statement also highlighted a recent rescue operation as evidence of the link between illegal mining and broader social exploitation.

“Just a week ago, Challenging Heights, in partnership with the Ghana Police Service, rescued 25 young girls who were trafficked from Nigeria and forced into prostitution in an illegal mining site in the Western Region of Ghana”.

Additionally, the group indicated that earlier this year, eight illegal miners lost their lives in a standoff with the military in Obuasi. Challenging Heights said it has since been supporting the children and families the victims left behind, further underlining the long-term social costs of galamsey.

The environmental consequences, the group warned, are equally dire. It drew attention to the pollution of major rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim with toxic chemicals, which threatens public health, risks severe water scarcity, and could lead to a rise in chronic diseases.

“As a nation, we cannot in good conscience stand by while this destructive practice steals our very foundations,” the group said. In urging the government to honour the memory of the ministers and their colleagues, Challenging Heights called for “comprehensive and urgent strategies” to be rolled out without delay.

Calls for Stronger Law Enforcement

These strategies, it said, must include stronger law enforcement, vigorous prosecution of those who employ children in illegal mining, and guarantees that every child has access to quality education.

The group also advocated for the strengthening of social protection programmes to prevent families from resorting to child labour, as well as the provision of medical, psychological, and educational support to children rescued from mining sites.

It further stressed the need to tackle the economic drivers that push individuals and families into illegal mining, positioning the rCOMSDE programme as a central pillar of this approach. For Challenging Heights, the loss of life in the helicopter crash should serve as a rallying point for national action.

“Let the memory of those we have regrettably lost be the fuel for intensified, unwavering action. Let us stand united in our commitment to protect our children and the environment from the devastating consequences of illegal mining and build a brighter future for all.”

James Kofi Annan, President of Challenging Heights

The group’s appeal adds to growing public pressure on the government to take decisive and sustained action against illegal mining. While successive administrations have launched various anti-galamsey campaigns, implementation gaps, inconsistent enforcement, and the lure of quick profits have hampered progress.

By tying the call for action to the memory of the crash victims—particularly the ministers who were travelling to advance the rCOMSDE programme—Challenging Heights hopes to spur a new phase of urgency in the fight.

For the organisation, this is not simply about environmental conservation but about protecting human lives, safeguarding children’s rights, and securing the nation’s health and economic future.
