Cape Coast is packed this weekend. The streets hum with people, the smell of grilled tilapia and pepper sauce hangs in the air, and music spills from temporary bars and open courtyards.

It is the height of the 2026 Oguaa Fetu Afahye, and on Saturday evening one of Ghana’s most consistent highlife voices will take the stage at Lush on the Coast.

Kofi Kinaata posted the announcement early Saturday morning. “Cape Coast! Let’s meet this Evening at the Afahye Highlife Party. Location: Lush on the Coast,” he wrote, adding the familiar #TeamMooove tag. Within hours the post had gathered hundreds of likes and shares.

Fans already in town for the festival began making plans. Others in Takoradi, Accra and beyond checked transport options and hotel availability.

Fetu Afahye is the major annual festival of the chiefs and people of the Oguaa Traditional Area. It is held on the first Saturday of September and combines thanksgiving for the year’s harvest, rituals of cleansing, and the reaffirmation of community ties. This year’s theme centres on heritage, resilience and prosperity.

The city has been transforming for days. Colourful decorations line the main routes. Traders have set up along Kotokuraba, Starlet 1991 Street and the stretch toward Adisadel. Makeshift pubs and eateries have sprung up, turning ordinary stretches of road into lively night-time corridors.

Saturday itself is the climax. During the day the grand durbar of chiefs takes place, with traditional leaders in full regalia, processions of the Asafo companies, public thanksgiving rites and the gathering of the community. Once those formal events conclude, attention shifts to the music and the nightlife.

Youth dance competitions, live band performances and late-night sessions at beach venues and pubs keep the city moving until the early hours.

Lush on the Coast has become one of the preferred spots for these evening gatherings. The beachside venue offers space, a view of the water and the kind of open atmosphere that suits highlife. Organisers have not released a detailed line-up for the night, yet Kinaata’s confirmed appearance is enough to draw a substantial crowd.

His reputation rests on a steady run of well-crafted songs that sit comfortably inside the highlife tradition while speaking directly to everyday Ghanaian life.

Born Martin King Arthur in Effiakuma, Takoradi, in 1990, Kinaata first gained attention through rap competitions and early singles. Over time he settled into a style that mixes rapid Fante verses with warm, melodic highlife grooves. Tracks such as “Susuka,” “Thy Grace” and the more recent “It Is Finished” have become familiar across the country.

Earlier this year he collected Best Highlife Artiste and Best Highlife Song awards at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, reinforcing his place among the leading voices of the genre. Fans and older musicians often point to him as someone still carrying highlife forward without abandoning its roots.

Impact of His Performance

His decision to perform during Afahye fits a wider pattern. Highlife has long provided the soundtrack for the festival. Live bands, veteran performers and newer acts share stages and courtyards across the city. In past years the evenings after the durbar have produced some of the most memorable moments of the celebration.

Kinaata’s set is expected to lean into that spirit; songs that get people dancing mixed with the reflective storytelling that marks much of his catalogue.

The festival has already delivered an economic lift. Hotels report solid occupancy. Food vendors, cloth sellers and small traders are busy. The Central Region Trade and Investment Fair running alongside the cultural events has attracted exhibitors and additional visitors.

Tourism officials see the combination of tradition, history and entertainment as a chance to showcase what Cape Coast and the wider Central Region can offer beyond the well-known castles and Kakum National Park.

For many who make the journey, the music remains the strongest pull. Kinaata’s ability to move between sharp, humorous Fante lines and smoother highlife melodies has built him an audience that crosses generations. Younger listeners know the recent hits. Older ones hear echoes of the highlife that shaped earlier decades.

His parallel role as a National Goodwill Ambassador for the International Organization for Migration occasionally brings messages about safe migration and opportunities at home into his public appearances, yet tonight the focus is clearly on performance and celebration.

As the afternoon progresses, people will begin moving from the durbar grounds and the decorated streets toward the coast. Some will come directly after the traditional events. Others will have spent the day walking the city, watching processions or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

By evening the area around Lush on the Coast is expected to fill. The drums that have sounded across Cape Coast all week will still be audible in the distance.

It is one more moment in a festival that has endured colonial-era restrictions, economic pressures and shifting musical tastes while remaining central to the identity of the Oguaa people.

When the lights come up at Lush on the Coast and the first notes ring out, the crowd will be ready. For a few hours on a September Saturday, Cape Coast will have one of its most popular highlife voices on stage, adding another chapter to a celebration that continues to bring the city together.
