Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyeben

Special Prosecutor nominee, Kissi Agyebeng has been recommended by Appointments Committee of Parliament for approval.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, the recommendation was a unanimous decision taken by the committee.

“He met all the requirements that we were looking for in a nominee for the Office of the Special Prosecutor. So, the committee unanimously agreed to recommend him to the House for approval.”

This decision comes about right after the nominee went through his vetting process in the early hours of the day.

“We’ll put our recommendation for the House to determine whether to approve or disapprove our recommendation. As to how other people view his answers, I would rather leave it to them and stay within the rules to make recommendations to the House. The committee unanimously agreed to recommend him to the House for approval.”

I’m entering with my strategy

Kissi Agyebeng, the special prosecutor nominee,;said that even though it is impossible for any humans to stop corruption, he will make it difficult for public officials to engage in the act.

“I am my own man and I’m coming with my own mind. There is no way I can stop corruption. But I’m going to make corruption very costly to engage in.”

Establish local corruption index

Mr. Agyeben also advocated for the establishment of a local corruption perception index to measure the level of corruption in public institutions in Ghana.

Mr. Agyebeng further said the law empowers him as a special prosecutor to establish a risk assessment of the public sector agencies to institutionalize such index.

“Why can’t we have our own corruption perception index for instance? Why can’t I rank public sector agencies against each other,;and at the end of the year publicize the results as to which institution is doing well and which one is not.”

Kissi Agyebeng

Mr. Kissi Agyebeng believes such assessment could help in the fight against corruption in the public sector and other agencies.

“In that quest if you are a head of an institution and persistently your institution is drawing the short straw in terms of the perception of corruption from the point of view of experts, business people, you will sit up.”

Kissi Agyebeng

Commenting on the Agyapa deal, Mr. Agyebeng denied claims that he was involved in the botched Agyapa Royalties deal. He said such claims are unfortunate and from an uninformed position. Also

“I wasn’t involved in the deal. I was nowhere near it. Indeed, until it started coming up, I didn’t even know what it was.”
