Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has admitted that club’s prolonged poor form is taking an emotional toll and “hurts” after Bournemouth condemned the Red Devils to a damaging 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
The result extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions and intensified pressure on Carrick, with the 20-time English league champions continuing to struggle for consistency in the Premier League.
Bournemouth exposed United’s defensive weaknesses throughout the match, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson securing a convincing victory and leaving the hosts facing another disappointing afternoon in front of their supporters.
Speaking after the defeat, Carrick acknowledged the responsibility of leading United through such a difficult period and conceded that the team’s performances and results have fallen below the required standard.
“I feel a lot of responsibility. It hurts an awful lot to see us going through this moment in time.”

The defeat left United 16th in the Premier League standings on seven points after eight league matches, further increasing concern over the club’s direction.
Bournemouth Punish United’s Defensive Errors
Bournemouth’s efficiency in front of goal proved decisive as the visitors capitalised on United’s defensive errors to extend their impressive record at Old Trafford.

Rayan opened the scoring midway through the first half before Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s advantage on the stroke of half-time. United therefore went into the interval two goals down, facing a difficult task against opponents who had made better use of their opportunities.
The visitors continued to exploit the hosts’ defensive weaknesses after the restart. Evanilson completed the scoring after capitalising on a mistake by goalkeeper Senne Lammens, sliding the ball past him and finishing into an empty net.
Bournemouth Strengthen Old Trafford Dominance
The result strengthened Bournemouth’s recent dominance over United in Manchester. The Cherries have now won three of their last four Premier League visits to Old Trafford, with each victory ending in a 3-0 scoreline.
Their only match without a victory during that period was a 4-4 draw on their previous visit before Sunday’s encounter.
Bournemouth have also become the first club to score at least three goals in four successive Premier League away matches against Manchester United, underlining the scale of the home side’s defensive difficulties.
Despite their impressive European form, however, the victory was only Bournemouth’s second in the Premier League this season, highlighting the contrasting challenges facing both sides in domestic competition.
Carrick Uncertain About What Comes Next
The defeat has also intensified questions about Carrick’s future and United’s immediate direction, with the manager conceding that he does not know what comes next amid the club’s difficult run.

Carrick said he understood the seriousness of the situation and the expectations attached to his position at one of England’s most successful clubs.
“It’s a tough situation. There’s no hiding from it. What it looks like, what’s next, I really don’t know.”

He also rejected suggestions that his post-match demeanour should be interpreted as a farewell, explaining that his emotions were driven by the result and concern for his players. “It was not a farewell from me but I was really mixed emotions,” Carrick stated.
Although Carrick expressed appreciation for the support he has received, he admitted that United have not produced the performances required to change their fortunes. “I certainly appreciate the support but the situation is where we are, and we haven’t had results and we haven’t had performances that have been good enough,” he added.
He further insisted that his decisions would remain guided by the interests of the club, saying “I’ll always do what’s best for this football club.”
Maguire Calls for United to Look Within
Harry Maguire echoed Carrick’s concerns after the match, acknowledging that United have struggled to find the right balance as their disappointing run continues.
The England international admitted that recent performances had not been good enough and urged his teammates to examine their individual contributions as they seek to reverse the situation.
“It’s not clicking at the moment. Results are not good enough, and performances in the last week are not good enough.”

He nevertheless stressed that the season remains at a stage where the players can respond, provided they accept responsibility and identify areas for improvement.
“Still early in the season. We’ve got to find something, question yourself, look in the mirror, think about what you can do more.”

United’s latest defeat leaves them with just one win from their first eight Premier League matches and two victories in their last 12 games across all competitions.

With no league win in their last six matches, the Red Devils are enduring their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, and the pressure is mounting for a response.
Carrick’s future remains in the balance but his immediate challenge is now to halt the decline and restore confidence to a side that has struggled to deliver the results expected at Old Trafford.
United’s next assignment is a trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on Saturday.
