Former President of Ghana and Presidential Candidate for 2020 General election, John Dramani Mahama has accused the incumbent, New Patriotic Party (NPP), of manipulating the election results to the detriment of National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, NDC would have had a clean Majority in Parliament if election results were honestly collated in some constituencies.
“But for the arm twisting that they twisted against us in some constituencies, we would have had the clean majority in Parliament.”

Even though John Mahama did not state specific constituencies, he indicated that NPP directed soldiers to invade coalition centers and manipulated the results which hindered NDC MPs from winning rightfully.
Speaking to the chiefs and people of Upper West Region on August 23, as part of his ‘Thank You Tour’, Former President Mahama, talked about NDC’s performance in the past election.
He revealed that NDC’s Parliamentary seats has risen from 106 in 2016 to 137 in 2020 which is equivalent to the number of Parliamentary seats obtained by NPP also.
Mr. Mahama further described the equality in number of Parliamentary seats gained by both parties as a ‘Hung’ in parliament.
Despite the absence of both Majority and Minority, the Former President was hopeful that the 8th Parliament will serve as a check on the NPP government given that the Right Honorable Speaker is also coming from the NDC.
“As we speak, there is no Majority, there is no Minority. This a good outcome for the people of Ghana, because it takes away the impunity that normally the ruling party has when it has an overwhelming Majority.”
John Dramani Mahama
John Dramani Mahama alleged that when the NPP had Majority in Parliament, they just railroaded everything through Parliament without consideration. But now that there is no Majority nor Minority, it will not be possible for them to proceed that same way.
The Former President also expressed his gratitude for the support NDC gained from the Upper West region during the 2020 elections.
According to him, “it has been a very impressive performance, nationally, we increased our votes a little over 4 million to almost 6.3 million votes in 2020 election. And your vote from the Upper West Region contributed to this impressive performance”.
Equip already existing hospitals
Former President Mahama admonished the incumbent government to prioritize equipping already existing hospitals while thinking about more hospitals.
During his speech in the Upper West Region, he advised that President Akuffo-Addo should give attention to Upper West Regional Hospital. Because, since it was commissioned, it has not been able to function fully.
Therefore, he advised the government to provide capital for facility in order for it operate at full capacity.
