In a move signaling a profound shift towards sustainable energy solutions, Africa-focused energy trader Mocoh SA has announced the establishment of a new biofuels trading arm in collaboration with Clear Sustainable Energy Trading AG.
The venture, named Mocoh Sustainable Energy Trading SA (MSET), is poised to address the escalating demand for sustainable fuels across various sectors, including shipping, aviation, and power generation.
MSET’s inception marks a strategic pivot for Mocoh, aligning with its vision to diversify into lower carbon commodities. With a robust track record spanning 25 years, Mocoh has primarily focused on trading crude oil and refined products within Africa.
However, the emergence of sustainable energy as a global imperative has spurred the company to adapt and expand its portfolio.
“This exciting new development is firmly in line with Mocoh’s strategy to diversify into lower carbon commodities. We have been building our capacity to collect and process Africa origin bio feedstocks over the last few years, and so this alliance is a natural next step,” remarked Mocoh CEO, Guy Hacking.
The partnership between Mocoh and Clear Sustainable Energy Trading AG signifies a collaborative effort to capitalize on the potential of biofuels, leveraging Mocoh’s expertise in energy trading and Clear Sustainable Energy Trading AG’s commitment to sustainability.
The venture will initially focus on marketing biofuels, including those produced by Mocoh itself, with the establishment of a plant in Nigeria.
Biofuel Production from Cashew Nut Waste
In collaboration with Lagos-based Bioscape, Mocoh aims to commence biofuel production from cashew nut waste, with an anticipated output of around 5,000 tonnes per year. This venture not only addresses the imperative to reduce waste but also highlights the potential for innovative solutions to emerge from unlikely sources.
Moreover, MSET’s ambitions extend beyond the shores of Africa, with plans to establish a presence in Europe and explore opportunities in other African countries. The company aims to tap into various agricultural and industrial waste streams, harnessing their potential for conversion into sustainable fuel sources.
This holistic approach underscores MSET’s commitment to environmental stewardship while simultaneously meeting the evolving energy needs of diverse markets.
“We are thrilled to combine the strengths and reputation of both companies. MSET will provide customers with efficient and competitive access to the global biofuels/feedstocks market, with a strong focus on African and European origin products,” commented Sebastiaan Phielix, CEO of Clear Sustainable Energy Trading AG.
The establishment of Mocoh Sustainable Energy Trading SA heralds a new chapter in Africa’s energy sector, one characterized by innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. By harnessing the latent potential of biofuels derived from renewable sources, Mocoh reaffirms its commitment to driving positive change within the energy sector.
As the global community contends with the dual challenges of climate change and energy security, initiatives like MSET serve as beacons of hope, demonstrating that sustainable solutions are not only viable but also economically feasible.
In embracing this paradigm shift, Mocoh not only secures its position as a leading energy trader but also paves the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.
