The Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC) has embarked on an ambitious path to ramp up bauxite production to six million tonnes by the end of 2025, following a strategic investment of US$122.97 million aimed at modernising infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency.
General Manager of GBC, Mr. Alexander Gyedu, announced that this aggressive expansion plan is already yielding results.
“We have seen production volumes increase from 1.3 million tonnes per annum to 1.8 million tonnes in 2024, thanks to the combination of advanced surface mining technology and traditional drill-and-blast methods.”
Mr. Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of GBC
Mr. Gyedu credited the turnaround to the acquisition of GBC by Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL) from Chinese firm Bosai Group in 2022.
“The change in ownership has been a catalyst for growth.
“OPCL has injected new life into GBC by replacing obsolete machinery and expanding our fleet significantly.”
Mr. Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of GBC
Since taking over, OPCL has procured 42 earth-moving machines, 52 dump trucks, 16 utility vehicles, one surface miner, and 35 light-duty vehicles. A second surface miner is expected by the end of June 2025.
The Haulage Department has also been transformed, with 161 9-axle trucks added to the fleet, increasing bauxite transportation volumes from 600,000 tonnes in 2022 to a projected 1.7 million tonnes in 2024.
While pursuing rapid industrial growth, GBC maintains a strong commitment to environmentally responsible mining.
“We are mining in a region known for its rich biodiversity. That’s why environmental protection is non-negotiable.”
Mr. Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of GBC
GBC adheres strictly to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, including routine audits and comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments.
“We file our environmental reports with the EPA diligently.
“We are also implementing reclamation plans alongside mining operations to ensure sustainability.”
Mr. Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of GBC
GBC’s ecological efforts have earned praise from environmental experts, who underscore the importance of balancing resource exploitation with ecological preservation.
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has consistently called on mining companies to prioritize responsible mining, and GBC is cited as a positive example.
Revitalizing Ghana’s Bauxite
Ghana’s history with bauxite dates back to 1921 when it was first discovered by the Gold Coast Geological Survey.
GBC has been producing high-grade trihydrate bauxite from its Inchiniso pit since 1969, with an average Run-of-Mine (ROM) output of 2.5 million metric tonnes per year.
The current mining lease, ratified for 30 years, covers an extensive area of 47.04 square kilometres across Subri, Inchiniso, Kanayerebo, Afumba, and Boakakhirri.
With the government retaining a 20% share in the company and OPCL holding the remaining 80%, this public-private partnership presents a model for resource-based national development.
“We’re not just increasing output; we’re supporting livelihoods and contributing to local economic development.”
Mr. Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of GBC
In line with Ghana’s broader mining sector vision, GBC’s efforts dovetail with government initiatives to attract investment, improve mining governance, and promote local content.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Minerals Commission are actively collaborating with companies like GBC to implement best practices in resource management.
Mr. Gyedu called for continued support from government agencies and stakeholders to ensure GBC’s efforts align with the nation’s development objectives.
“With transparency, community collaboration, and sustainability at the heart of our operations, we are not only mining bauxite—we are building a future for Ghana.”
Mr. Alexander Gyedu, General Manager of GBC
As GBC works toward its six million-tonne production target, the company’s investment in technology and environmental sustainability is expected to drive economic growth, create job opportunities, and reinforce Ghana’s position as a key player in global bauxite production.
