The LMI Holdings’ Mega Warehouse has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first warehouse in the country to receive the prestigious International Financial Corporation (IFC) EDGE Green Building Certification.

This certification is granted to businesses that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable practices and take a leading role in implementing green initiatives within their industry.

Mega Warehouse earned this recognition due to its emphasis on efficient energy and water management, along with the use of environmentally friendly construction materials like cement, steel, and glass.

The EDGE Certification program also acknowledged LMI’s adoption of innovative technologies and designs, which are expected to result in a 26 percent decrease in energy consumption, a 20 percent decrease in water usage, and a remarkable 73 percent decrease in the carbon footprint associated with construction materials.

LMI Holdings is recognized as a leader in the development sector, being the principal developer of the Tema Free Zone Area (Tema FZ).

The company hosts over 80 businesses across various industries, including building materials, manufacturing, and agro-processing.

The LMI Mega Warehouse, spanning 100,000 square meters, incorporates several sustainability features that highlight LMI’s dedication to environmental preservation.

These include a reduced Window-to-Wall Ratio, a reflective roof, high-performance glass, efficient ceiling fans, water-efficient fixtures, and the use of low-carbon materials.

This green certification aligns closely with LMI’s overarching sustainability vision, which was further supported by a US$30 million loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in 2022.

The loan was specifically intended to finance a 16.8 MWp rooftop solar plant aimed at powering businesses within the Tema Free Zone (Tema FZ).

This initiative is projected to boost Ghana’s solar capacity by 9 percent and curtail CO2 emissions by more than 10,000 tonnes annually.

Moreover, Kojo Aduhene, the Chief Executive Officer of LMI, expressed pride in the recognition, emphasizing that it underscores his company’s environmental commitment. He highlighted LMI’s dedication to prioritizing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in all its operations.

Also, Emmanuel Apotae Manu, the Managing Director of International Warehousing Company, underscored the company’s firm dedication to customer satisfaction and sustainability.

He conveyed confidence in the company’s growth prospects, driven by robust demand and a proactive approach to meeting customer requirements.

Regarding the certification, he emphasized its significance in demonstrating the company’s commitment to meeting global standards, thereby enabling corporations — especially multinationals — to select LMI with confidence as their preferred logistics partner in the country.

In addition to boosting customer confidence, he stated that the certification has positioned LMI as a trailblazer in Ghana’s commercial warehouse sector.

IFC Commends LMI’s Sustainable Leadership and Benchmark

Furthermore, Kyle Kelhofer, the IFC Senior Country Manager for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, highlighted the significance of the EDGE Green Building Certification awarded to LMI Holdings’ Mega Warehouse.

He emphasized that this achievement sets a notable benchmark for the sector and an advancement for sustainable industrial development in Ghana.

Kelhofer commended LMI Holdings for exemplifying environmentally responsible practices within the construction sector and called for a collective effort towards achieving sustainability goals.

“At IFC, we are glad to support eco-initiatives that foster both economic and environmental benefits. For over three decades, LMI Holdings has been a visionary leader in innovation in Ghana. The company’s commitment to sustainability is exemplified by the Mega Warehouse, through the implementation of eco-friendly building practices.

“This approach reduces the warehouse’s carbon footprint and serves as a benchmark for the industry. This further distinguishes it as Ghana’s premier warehouse to be recognized for its exceptional dedication to green building standards.”

The EDGE green building certification program, backed by the UK Government and Switzerland’s SECO, sets global standards for eco-friendly construction.

IFC’s EDGE software and certification system helps developers create energy-efficient, cost-effective buildings with low emissions, advancing sustainable development in construction practices worldwide.
