MTN Ghana is commemorating a significant milestone—15 years since the introduction of its Mobile Money (MoMo) financial services.
The celebration, launched in Takoradi under the theme “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion,” reflects on the strides made and the challenges overcome in bringing financial services to the fingertips of millions of Ghanaians.
Fifteen years ago, the financial sector in Ghana was vastly different. Traditional banking services were largely inaccessible to a significant portion of the population, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Many Ghanaians faced immense challenges in conducting basic financial transactions, limiting economic growth and personal empowerment. Recognizing this gap, MTN Ghana embarked on a mission to make a meaningful difference by driving change and bringing financial services closer to every Ghanaian.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer at the anniversary launch, Mr. Solomon Hayford, Head of Business Intelligence and Decision Support at Mobile Money Limited, emphasized the visionary goals that led to the creation of MoMo. “When we embarked on this journey 15 years ago, the landscape of financial services in Ghana was vastly different. Traditional banking services were inaccessible to a significant segment of the population, particularly those in rural and underserved areas,” he stated.
Transforming Lives and Strengthening Communities
Since its inception, MoMo has played a crucial role in transforming lives, empowering individuals, and strengthening communities. The platform has contributed significantly to Ghana’s economic growth by providing an accessible and efficient means for conducting financial transactions. This service has not only facilitated personal financial management but has also enabled businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to thrive by providing them with a reliable platform for transactions.
Mr. Hayford highlighted the impact of MoMo on the broader financial ecosystem, noting, “We recognized this gap and took on the challenge to make a meaningful difference by driving change and bringing financial services to the fingertips of every Ghanaian through the power of the mobile phone.”
Challenges Along the Journey
Despite the numerous gains, the journey has not been without challenges. One of the most significant issues faced by MTN Ghana in promoting digital and financial inclusion has been MoMo fraud. Fraudulent activities have posed a serious threat to the trust and security of the platform, undermining efforts to create a safe environment for users.
Mr. Hayford acknowledged this ongoing challenge, stating, “MoMo fraud is an issue we are very passionate about at Mobile Money Limited, and we will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitization and awareness initiatives while investing in robust security measures to combat it and protect our valued customers.”
Mr. Hayford urged customers to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect themselves from fraudsters. “We need to protect our PINS and avoid clicking on unsolicited links, responding to fake SMS messages, or following the instructions of any random caller,” he advised.
To mark this momentous occasion, MTN Ghana has lined up a series of activities to engage with customers, partners, and the broader community. These activities include market launches, floats on principal streets across the country, a MoMo fraud awareness campaign, and skills training for SMEs. Additionally, awards nights will be held to recognize the contributions of various stakeholders, and new services will be launched to further enhance the MoMo experience.
MTN Ghana’s 15th-anniversary celebration is not just about looking back at the achievements but also about setting the stage for the future. The company remains committed to its mission of driving financial and digital inclusion, empowering communities, and creating an ecosystem where every Ghanaian can thrive.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Hayford expressed gratitude to all the partners who have played a pivotal role in the success of MoMo, including regulatory bodies, financial institutions, technology partners, agents, and merchants. “We express our appreciation to our partners for their pivotal roles in creating an enabled environment for MoMo to thrive,” he said.
As MTN Ghana celebrates 15 years of MoMo, the journey continues with a renewed commitment to overcoming challenges and expanding the reach of financial services to every corner of the country. The future of MoMo looks promising, with the potential to further transform lives and contribute to Ghana’s economic development.
