The telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana, has officially announced the suspension of its MTN Data Zone bundle in obedience to the directive of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

In a statement, MTN Ghana explained that the suspension of the innovative Data Zone bundle is due to a review of the bundle offer in line with the Significant Market Power (SMP) directives applied to MTN Ghana in June 2020, not to be the lowest priced on any offer in the industry.

“We are currently engaging and collaborating with the Regulator, as we seek alignment on a revised Data Zone bundle to be reinstated as soon as possible. We will notify you in due course of further developments.”

MTN Ghana used the opportunity to reassure its customers that it would continue to roll out innovative and affordable products and services for the benefit of its cherished customers.

Data Zone bundle is an innovation by MTN Ghana that gives customers a 1-day validity bundle at discounted rates at the point of purchase. Subscription is through the Short Code 135.

MTN is the only SMP in Ghana’s telecom industry and that is because, according to the government, it commands over 75% of the entire telecoms market in terms of voice, data, mobile money and revenue.

As a result, government has enjoined MTN to implement a number of measures designed to “correct the market imbalance” by helping to make the smaller players a bit more appealing in terms of pricing and product offers.

Ordering MTN to ensure that it does not have the lowest priced products and services on the market is part of seven regulatory intervention measures to correct the market imbalance.

Subscribers of the MTN zone bundle since last week started wondering if the service will still come back after it was taken off unannounced. However, this statement from MTN will put to bed all speculations regarding the service, though it’s a big blow to subscribers who depend on the service to navigate this difficult economy.

However, MTN Ghana also offers a range of other data packages, such as MTN Basic Packages, MTN Midnight Packages, MTN Kokrokoo Bundle, and MTN Social Media Bundles, in addition to MTN Zone Bundles.

MTN Ghana is the market leader in the mobile telecommunications industry in Ghana, offering subscribers a range of exciting options under Pay As You Go, Pay Monthly and Mobile Financial Services.

The company is part of the MTN Group which is a leading emerging market leader with a clear vision to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world to its customers. The company is inspired by the belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. Scancom PLC is listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. It’s strategy is Ambition 2025: Leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress.
