CalBank Marks 35 Years of Values-Driven Growth Wit Red Week Reflections

CalBank’s Managing Director, Mr. Carl Asem

CalBank, one of Ghana’s premier indigenous banks, has launched a week-long celebration dubbed “Red Week” to commemorate its 35 years of impactful service in the country’s financial sector.

The festivities began with a heartfelt thanksgiving service held at its headquarters in Accra, marking a reflective and celebratory milestone in the bank’s growth journey.

The theme of “Red Week” captures more than just the bank’s signature colour—it embodies the ethos and values that have defined CalBank since its establishment. As the institution reflects on its journey, it also reaffirms its commitment to customers, staff, and stakeholders who have been integral to its success story over the decades.

CalBank’s Managing Director, Mr. Carl Asem, took center stage during the launch, explaining that “Red” is not just a bold colour representing the bank—it is a guiding acronym rooted in its operational philosophy: R for being Responsible to all stakeholders, E for being Effective in daily operations, and D for being Decisive in action.

“Our Red Week is actually reflecting on our values,” Asem emphasized. “We strongly believe that our values are the ones that have propelled us all these years, since the inception of the bank.”

He elaborated on how these values influence the institution’s culture and strategic direction.

“How responsible are we to all our stakeholders? Our customers, both external and internal? In reflecting on those values, our day-to-day job must focus on how effective we can be. And the last is being decisive. It’s what makes the huge difference of Bismarck.”

This introspective message underlines CalBank’s belief that it is not just financial performance, but a commitment to ethical conduct, proactive decisions, and stakeholder inclusivity that have made the bank resilient and trustworthy over the past 35 years.

Championing Indigenous Banking

Beyond celebrating legacy, Mr. Asem used the platform to emphasize the critical role that indigenous banks like CalBank play in Ghana’s broader economic development and stability. He made a passionate call for greater recognition and support for local banks in a financial environment that often leans heavily on foreign participation.

“We always strongly believe that indigenous banks in this country—and everywhere—have a much greater role to play. Any country that relies on foreigners to run their banking system puts itself at great risk.”

Mr. Carl Asem

Asem added that local banks are uniquely positioned to understand domestic challenges, respond swiftly to local needs, and remain committed during economic downturns.

“In terms of support and driving the economy, it’s only the indigenous banks that understand how the country operates and how to provide relevant support. When everything comes down, it’s the indigenous banks who don’t leave. They stay, and they help ensure the economy gets back on track.”

Mr. Carl Asem

This statement underscores a broader theme within CalBank’s anniversary: resilience and national loyalty. The bank’s leadership sees its legacy not merely in financial metrics, but in its unwavering dedication to supporting Ghana’s economic aspirations.

Three and a Half Decades of Excellence

Over its 35-year history, CalBank has evolved from a modest financial institution into a dynamic, innovation-driven player in Ghana’s banking industry. Known for its customer-centric approach and embrace of digital transformation, the bank has introduced several products and services tailored to meet the changing needs of individuals, SMEs, and corporate clients.

It has also maintained a strong focus on sustainability and governance, aligning its strategies with long-term economic and social progress. Whether through SME financing, technological innovation, or community engagement, CalBank has consistently prioritized meaningful impact.

As part of the “Red Week” celebrations, the bank is expected to roll out additional activities involving staff appreciation, customer engagement, and corporate social initiatives—all aimed at reinforcing its bond with the public and acknowledging the people behind its success.
