In a significant step toward enhancing financial security for mobile money agents, aYo Ghana, in collaboration with MobileMoney LTD and Sanlam Allianz Life Insurance Ghana LTD, has introduced a comprehensive life insurance package.

This initiative aims to provide MoMo agents with financial protection at no additional cost, ensuring their well-being and peace of mind.

The newly launched insurance cover offers extensive benefits, including protection against permanent and total disability, temporary total disability, critical illness, accidental medical reimbursement, hospitalization, and death benefits. MoMo agents who suffer from critical illnesses such as stroke, cancer, major burns, heart attacks, or kidney failure will receive financial support. Additionally, daily hospital cash benefits will be provided to help cover medical expenses in case of hospitalization.

The insurance cover, which is renewed annually, underscores the commitment of aYo Ghana and its partners to safeguarding the livelihood of MoMo agents. The policy aims to provide a safety net against unforeseen risks that agents face in their daily operations.

A Commitment to Agent Welfare

Speaking at the launch event, Chief Sales and Distribution Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Samuel Addo, emphasized the crucial role MoMo agents play in financial inclusion, particularly in underserved communities. He explained that this initiative aligns with MobileMoney LTD’s broader commitment to supporting agents’ welfare, complementing other efforts such as providing kiosks, laptops, motorbikes, CCTV cameras, and vehicles to enhance their work.

“At MobileMoney LTD, we take agent safety and well-being seriously. We have partnered with Sanlam Allianz Life Insurance Ghana LTD and aYo Ghana Intermediaries Ghana Limited to provide enhanced coverage. This partnership reinforces our commitment to protect and empower our mobile money agents.”

Mr. Samuel Addo

Beyond the financial protection offered through insurance, MobileMoney LTD is also concerned about the growing security threats MoMo agents face. In recent years, there has been an increase in attacks on MoMo agents, putting their lives and livelihoods at risk. Mr. Addo assured that MobileMoney LTD is taking this matter seriously and is working with relevant stakeholders to improve security.

“Beyond providing the insurance cover, we will also continue to work with relevant stakeholders to improve security for mobile money agents and ensure a holistic approach to our intervention.”

Insurance at No Cost to Agents

A major highlight of the new insurance scheme is that MoMo agents do not have to pay any premiums.

Chief Commercial Officer of MTN MoMo, Abdul-Razak Ali, reiterated that MobileMoney LTD has taken the responsibility of covering the premiums for all agents, ensuring that they receive these benefits without financial burden. “The insurance comes at no cost to agents, and MobileMoney LTD has paid the premium for all agents,” he assured.

This move is expected to ease the financial strain on MoMo agents, who work long hours and face unpredictable risks. By absorbing the insurance costs, MobileMoney LTD, aYo Ghana, and Sanlam Allianz are demonstrating their commitment to the well-being of mobile money agents.
