Young Ghanaian actress and songstress, Adomaa, has opened up about her long hiatus from the music scene and her mental health.
According to Adomaa, “weird deals” with some promoters and other factors broke her down, affecting her mental health in the process. The talented songstress disclosed that at a point, there was so much pressure on her to deliver, and she couldn’t keep up with the commands to do one thing or the other concerning her musical career.
“After a while, it just got very stressful, and I had a breakdown and I had to stop. It was actually very bad. I got into some very weird deals with some people who were supposed to help promote the songs, and it went really bad, and it started affecting my mental health,” Adomaa disclosed.
Adomaa revealed that she had to put a little break on her music career as she found a new passion in acting. However, after a year, she had a change of mind. Adomaa stressed that now she is planning for a huge return to the music industry.
Adomaa’s Break into Limelight
In 2016, when Afro-Jazz singer, Adomaa came into the limelight with her terrific mash-up of Stonebwoy’s ‘Baafira’. The hype around her was huge with many music enthusiasts touting her as “the next big thing”.
Trying to live up to the expectations, she followed up with another mash-up about the evolution of Ghanaian music, as well as EPs ‘Afraba’ and ‘Adomaa Vs Adomaa’, which had songs such as ‘Traffic Jam’, ‘April Fool’ and ‘Medaase’. However, the 2018 VGMA Unsung Act of the Year, was not able to reach the heights of stardom people anticipated.
Adomaa became quiet on the scene for some time until 2020, when people started seeing her in the Ghanaian telenovela, ‘Dede’, and it raised questions about whether she was abandoning music for acting. However, Adomaa, in an earlier interview, noted that even though the public may not have seen much of her for a while, she was still active in the music business.
“I accept that it’s been a while but I have not stopped doing music. I’m still into music and presently working on a project which I am hoping to bring out this year,” Adomaa said in a 2021 interview.
“Music and acting are jobs in the entertainment industry even though they have their own pros and cons. However, if others have been successful with the two, then I can also do it. Any time I get the chance, I go to the studio to work on my project so I have not pulled the brakes on my music, I’m very much active”.
Adomaa
Adomaa made her acting debut in the movie, ‘Bad Luck Joe’, and has been enjoying good reviews as the lead character in ‘Dede’, which is the creation of filmmaker, Shirley Frimpong Manso’s Sparrow Productions.
Adomaa, recounting how she landed her job, disclosed that she did a monologue for an Africa Magic movie during the lockdown in 2020, and her performance gave her a chance to feature in ‘Dede’ when she went for the audition.
“I have not done many auditions, so I was nervous, especially meeting Shirley Frimpong Manso who I admire so much. I channeled my nervousness into performance and I’m happy I didn’t look down on my myself but gave it my best shot,” Adomaa said.
Now she works with some A-list actors in the industry such as Lydia Forson, Adjetey Anaang, Anita Erskine among others.
