Embattled Ghanaian socialite, Rosemond Brown, popularly known as Akuapem Poloo, has filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal through her lawyers.
Akuapem Poloo is challenging the dismissal of her appeal by the High Court with regard to her 90–day jail term for posting a nude picture of herself on social media. Akuapem Poloo’s lawyers, led by Andrew Kudzo Vortia, filed the notice of appeal on behalf of the actress.
The notice of appeal was filed at the Appeal Court few days after her earlier petition was dismissed by Justice Ruby Aryeetey who ruled that the 90 days custodial sentence imposed on her by the Circuit Court was not “manifestly excessive”and “harsh”.
The notice read: “Please take note that the convict/appellant/appellant herein, being aggrieved by the judgement of the High Court Criminal Division (1) Accra, Her Ladyship Ruby Aryeetey dated 1 December 2021 dismissing the appellant appeal against the conviction and sentenced to 90 days imprisonment imposed on the appellant on each count to run concurrently by Her Honour Mrs Christiana Cann dated April 16, 2021, hereby appeals to the court of appeal on the grounds set out below and for the release stated hereunder.
“That the learned judge erred in failing to appreciate that as a young first offender and a single parent, a noncustodial sentence of a fine instead of a custodial sentence of 90days imposed on the appellant by the trial court is appropriate in this case. That the custodial sentence of 90 days imposed on the appellant be set aside and in lieu, be substituted with a non-custodial sentence or a fine”.
Appeal
The lawyers have also applied for bail for the actress pending the determination of the case.
The Accra High Court on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, ordered Akuapem Poloo to go back and complete her 90-day jail term at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
The high court dismissed the socialite’s appeal to overturn the 90-day jail term handed to her by an Accra Circuit Court in April 2021 for the publication of a nude picture with her son.
Afia Schwarzenegger Pleads With Ghanaians to Support Rosemond’s Son
Meanwhile, Ghanaian socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger tendered in a plea to Ghanaians on behalf of Akuapem Poloo. The actress begged Ghanaians to overlook Akuapem Poloo’s “ungrateful” nature and help her son who will be feeling lonely this Christmas.
Afia Schwarzenegger disclosed that she knows how difficult it is not to have a mother around as a child. She used her life as an example and narrated how she wept when her mother was not around on a certain festive season. She then pleaded with Ghanaians to provide the little support they can to Akuapem Poloo’s son so he does not miss his mother much as she serves 90 days in jail.
Responding to Afia Schwarzenegger’s call for help, Ghanaian controversial actress, Tracey Boakye offered to support Akuapem Poloo’s son in the absence of the socialite.
