Award-winning Ghanaian hip-hop and afrobeat artiste, Desmond Kwesi Blackmoore, better known as DBlack has advised upcoming artists to appreciate the smallest help, even if they grow to be big shots in the industry.

During an interview on an Accra-based radio station, he noted that loyalty is one thing that is very important to him, and is a trait that everyone, especially upcoming artistes need to have.

“The smallest thing anybody does for you, never leave it and never throw it back in their face. Don’t let anyone regret helping you no matter how small or big. Appreciate the smallest thing. I still talk to the first person that put me on air, on YFM, almost every month”.

“Waxy, the first person that gave me the opportunity to record music in the studio without asking me for money is the same person that mixes my songs till today. For ten years. Even tomorrow, I’ll go see him because I owe him a Christmas present. Don’t ever forget the smallest thing that people do for you”.

D Black emphasized that not forgetting whoever helped in the rise of an artist, does not mean talking about it every time or telling everyone about it, but showing appreciation whenever possible, be it verbally or physically in kind gesture is enough.

“The lifespan of artistes in the industry is very short. You can’t do this for the rest of your life. Six or seven years and you’re gone. Only a few people make it to eight, nine, or ten years. So, appreciate the little help that you get because you don’t know when you’re going to meet those people again”.

In the same vein, D Black, further talked about his lows in the music industry, throughout his ten years of fame.

He mentioned that he has had just a few lows and of course, lots of great times, however, there is one low among the few that really got to him.

Detailing on that, he stated that some of his lows have been losing his grandmother and his father and added that his biggest hit ‘Vera’, missed out on grabbing awards that he thought he was definitely going to win like the 2013 VGMAs.

D Black confessed that not being able to grab even one award after being nominated for five different categories during the 2013 VGMAs really got to him, however, he understands that such things happen and so far, it has been an amazing ten years in the music industry.

“I remember in 2013 when R2Bees topped the whole Ghana Music Awards. I went there with my madam. We entered the place, seven categories, I had five nominations. R2Bees had seven, they called all and R2Bees had six. EL had the last one. I’ll never forget that one. The 2013 VGMAs”.
