Artist Expresses Concern Over Decline of Dancehall Music

Epixode Opens Up About His Thoughts

Epixode

Dancehall music has long been a vibrant and influential component of Ghana’s entertainment landscape.

It is characterized by its energetic beats, distinctive style, and cultural resonance. However, in recent years, dancehall culture has been noticeably declining in prominence within the industry.

Ghanaian dancehall artist, Epixode, has expressed concern about the gradual decline of dancehall music, attributing its fall to a combination of industry missteps, misguided fan perceptions, and the genre’s branding challenges.

The award-winning artist did not hold back in dissecting what he believes went wrong.

According to Epixode, dancehall music, once a dominant force, began losing steam globally long before the Ghanaian scene started to feel the effects.

“Until Vybz Kartel came out of prison, dancehall was actually gone. We’d find dancehall artists doing Afrobeats and stuff. Afrobeats is ruling the world.”

Epixode

He admitted that Ghanaian dancehall artists failed to sustain the genre’s momentum during its prime, roughly five years ago. One of the main reasons, he said, was that artists focused more on mimicking the West than connecting with their cultural roots.

Epixode explained that many songs were filled with themes that didn’t resonate with the average Ghanaian listeners, songs about guns, violence, and gang rivalries, which alienated potential fans who couldn’t relate to that lifestyle. “When we started it, we misinformed the fans. We try to copy the West,” he said.

One of the most significant factors contributing to the decline of dancehall culture in Ghana is the rise of alternative musical genres, particularly Afrobeats and Hiplife.

These genres have gained immense popularity among the youth, who are increasingly drawn to their infectious rhythms and contemporary themes.

Afrobeats, with its blend of African rhythms and Western influences, has captured the local audience and gained international acclaim, leading to a shift in musical preferences.

As a result, dancehall, which often relies on a specific cultural context and lyrical themes, struggles to compete in an industry that is rapidly evolving.

The tastes of Ghanaian youth have shifted dramatically over the years, influenced by globalization and the accessibility of diverse musical styles through digital platforms.

The youth’s inclination towards genres that resonate with their experiences, such as Afrobeats, has led to a decline in the dancehall fanbase, further exacerbating the challenges faced by dancehall artists.

Challenges in Dancehall Music

In addition to the changing musical landscape, dancehall music in Ghana faces numerous challenges that hinder its ability to sustain its careers.

The lack of adequate support systems, such as funding, promotion, and access to quality production, deters emerging talent from pursuing dancehall music.

Many artists find it challenging to secure performance opportunities, leading to financial instability and a lack of visibility. Furthermore, the perception of dancehall as a niche genre discourages investment and sponsorship, further limiting the growth potential of the culture.

Another issue, Epixode believes, lies in how rivalry among Dancehall artists is misunderstood and often poorly handled.

While clashes and lyrical battles are part of the genre’s DNA, he argued that Ghanaian artists sometimes allow personal emotions to spill over, blurring the line between showbiz and real-life tension.

“The fans did not understand that the rivalry in Dancehall is for a purpose. We, the artists, are too emotional sometimes to control our feelings, and that influences the fans.”

The ripple effect of this behaviour, he noted, extends to the corporate world. Dancehall, often perceived as rowdy or aggressive, struggles to attract sponsorship and support from major brands.

“When corporate bodies want to come in, there is a certain misconception about the Dancehall space. Nobody wants to affiliate with us unless it’s one or two of us who have branded ourselves to suit the corporate space.”

Epixode

In contrast, Epixode referenced a shift happening in Jamaica itself, where the birthplace of Dancehall is witnessing a push for peace and positive messaging, something he believes Ghanaian artists can learn from if they want the genre to survive.

For Epixode, the survival of Dancehall depends not only on the creativity of the artists but also on their ability to evolve and stay grounded in local realities. Without that, he fears the genre may continue to decline in influence both at home and abroad.

The decline of dancehall culture in Ghana’s entertainment industry is a multifaceted issue influenced by the rise of alternative musical genres, shifting audience preferences, and systemic challenges faced by artists.

While dancehall has historically played a significant role in shaping Ghanaian music, the current landscape presents obstacles that threaten its sustainability.

To revive and preserve dancehall culture, stakeholders in the industry must recognize its value and work collaboratively to provide support, promote diversity, and create opportunities for artists to flourish.

Only then will dancehall reclaim its place as a vital force in Ghana’s rich and dynamic entertainment scene.
