Ghanaian Creatives Encouraged to Advocate Peace Through Their Platforms

Nana Otuo Owuahene Acheampong

As Ghana approaches its 2024 elections, a clarion call has emerged for creatives—artists, musicians, filmmakers, writers, and social media influencers—to leverage their platforms to promote peace and unity.

The significance of this initiative is underscored by the country’s rich history of democratic elections, which have occasionally been marred by violence and political tension.

In light of this, the role of creatives in fostering a peaceful electoral environment cannot be overstated.

The Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture (NCC), Nana Otuo Owuahene Acheampong, has called on Ghanaian creatives to dedicate their respective platforms to promote peace, particularly with the general election just around the corner.

Nana Acheampong emphasized the unique ability of artistic expressions to effectively reach a wider audience.

He pointed out that through storytelling, drama, music, and dance among others, players in the sector could present peace as a relatable and necessary goal, helping audiences connect with it on a personal level.

“People tend to absorb and remember visuals and sounds far more effectively than simple conversations. This unique power to communicate deeply and memorably places a special responsibility on creatives.

“By using their platforms strategically, I am certain they can shape and influence society in a meaningful way, particularly when it comes to spreading messages of peace.”

According to Nana Acheampong, this was achievable because creatives’ influence could go beyond surface-level interactions and contribute to a lasting culture of peace that endures long after election cycles.

Ghana has long been hailed as a beacon of democracy in West Africa, with a relatively stable political climate since the advent of multiparty democracy in the early 1990s.

However, past elections have seen instances of violence, particularly during periods of heightened political rivalry.

The 2020 elections, for instance, were characterized by pockets of unrest and allegations of electoral malpractice, raising concerns about the potential for similar occurrences in 2024.

The call for creatives to engage in peace advocacy is both timely and crucial. Their influence transcends traditional political discourse, reaching diverse audiences across various demographics.

By utilizing their platforms, creatives play a pivotal role in shaping public sentiment and encouraging peaceful participation in the electoral process.

Power of Creative Expression

Creatives possess a unique ability to convey messages that resonate emotionally with the public.

Through music, visual arts, literature, and digital content, they articulate the values of peace, tolerance, and unity in ways that are relatable and impactful.

Nana Otuo Owuahene Acheampong noted that this moment required a renewed commitment from the creative community to use their talents in service of national unity and therefore encouraged them to weave themes of harmony and understanding into their work across all mediums.

“Making peace a theme in your works, whether through a heartfelt song, a moving film, or a compelling stage performance, you have the unique ability to make peace feel tangible and achievable. As people experience these stories and see peace as something relatable and essential, the message of empathy and harmony will spread.”

According to him, Ghanaian creatives have the potential to create impactful and lasting messages. “These artistic expressions can go beyond surface-level interactions, fostering a true culture of peace that lingers in people’s minds and shapes their perceptions over time,” he added.

Several organizations and civil society groups in Ghana have already begun to mobilize creatives for peace advocacy. Initiatives such as “Peace Campaigns” and “Art for Peace” aim to harness the talents of local creatives to spread messages of tolerance and respect.

These campaigns often include workshops, community outreach programs, and collaborative projects that encourage dialogue and understanding among different political factions.

As Ghana’s elections draw nearer, the call for creatives to step up and advocate for peace becomes increasingly urgent. It is a collective responsibility that transcends individual political affiliations.

The message is clear: a peaceful election is not just the responsibility of politicians and law enforcement but of every citizen, especially those with the power to influence public opinion.

The 2024 elections present an opportunity for Ghana to reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles and peaceful coexistence.

As the countdown to the elections begins, the voices of creatives serve as a beacon of hope, guiding the nation toward a peaceful electoral process and a brighter future for all Ghanaians.
