Makola Market is currently trending on social media for all the wrong reasons. fire
This follows reports that a building opposite the SIC Mall at Makola in the central business district is being razed down by fire. However, according to witnesses, upon contacting the fire service, which is situated a few meters away from where the incident is occurring, they stated that “they do not have water”.
Well, Ghanaians are currently in a frenzy following this statement from the service and have taken to social media to vent out their anger.
Some who were obviously taken aback were of the view that the fire service has been a problem for ages now. According to them, “they are not serious” and that they will always wait for things to go south before the act. They also claimed that most of the time, they find the fire service officers loitering around and being ideal in front of their office when they could use that time to fill up their water tanks.
Some also argued that the police service should be swapped with the fire service. They explained that the police service seems to have so much water to even disperse demonstrations. However, the fire service doesn’t have enough water to quench the fire.
That notwithstanding, it seemed some had some thought-provoking questions on their minds they had to ask. They questioned how the service, that is just a few meters away from the incident, couldn’t get there on time to quench the fire. They also questioned the purpose of the fire service station being situated at the Makola market if it is not able to function as it should. They also asked why the service is under-resourced even after paying taxes which sees to it that such an agency is provided with every resource possible.
Meanwhile, some defended the service and rather pinned the blame on the government. Applauding the fire service station for quickly responding to the emergency call, they backlashed the government for not being able to provide the fire service with better working tools to make their work easier.
Nonetheless, some were of the view that the claims that the service was out of water cannot be true. According to them, the fighters “didn’t just go to watch the fire, since they tried to at least quench the fire”. However, there was a quick rebuttal to this argument as some people stated that if it really wasn’t true, then the fire would have been quenched a long time ago before it could even get intense.
More so, this has given voice to some of the #FixThe country protestants. These people were of the view that it is for some of these same reasons they have decided to call the government out to fix the system. However, they are being stifled in so many ways. According to them, such incidents happen and it’s only being addressed only through words and no action is done towards making the issue better. Therefore, they won’t relent to make this a national agenda and will also see to it that this particular problem is fixed.
Some reactions of Ghanaians on social media read:
How can Makola market, just beside the National Fire Service burn to ashes like this?

Do we even have a National Fire Service 😱😤?
I think that as a country we don't take matters seriously at all, this isn't the first time makola market is burning. Have we done thorough investigations into the situation?

How is it that Ghana police services got much water to disperse demonstrators but Ghana fire services struggle to get water to quench fire.

It's useless calling the fire service
Makola Market 🔥 🔥 is clearly showing how handicapped our fire service 🚒 men are with equipment. Under resourced over years is clearly making them inefficient.
