Managers Urged to Groom Artists’ Stagecraft Skills

In the modern music landscape, the allure of a hit song often overshadows the essential stagecraft skills needed for a successful performance.

With the rise of social media platforms and live performances as primary avenues for artistic expression, the role of a manager extends beyond simply promoting a catchy tune.

Managers are urged to groom their artists stagecraft skills, equipping them with the necessary skills to thrive in live settings and connect with their audience on a deeper level.

This shift enhances the performance quality and solidifies an artist’s brand and longevity in the competitive music industry.

Artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Kwesi Ernest, has raised concerns about the lack of stagecraft skills among some Ghanaian musicians despite their ability to produce hit songs.

He explained that while some artists are naturally talented both in the studio and on stage, others need additional training to improve their live performances.

“Some artists can compose beautiful hit songs, but when it comes to their stage presence, they falter. That’s where the management bodies come in. When an artist creates a hit song, the management has to do more to present the artist in a way that can impress the fans.”

Kwesi Ernest

Stagecraft encompasses various elements of live performance, including vocal delivery, movement, audience interaction, and the overall visual presentation.

While a hit song catapults an artist to fame, they deliver a compelling live performance that often determines their staying power.

Kwesi Ernest criticized the trend where some artists neglect training and instead rely on their popularity.

“A lot of artist management and labels focus on the number of hit songs they get from the artist, rather than their stagecraft. You follow these artists, and you’ll see that they don’t even have time to work on themselves, roaming around at odd hours.”

Kwesi Ernest

He lamented the inadequate attention stagecraft has contributed to Ghana missing out on opportunities on international platforms.

Kwesi Ernest emphasized that unless this issue is addressed, Ghana will continue to see subpar performance at major events.

Icons like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Bruno Mars exemplify how exceptional stagecraft elevates an artist’s status from mere hit-maker to a cultural phenomenon.

These performers invest time and resources into perfecting their craft, understanding that a memorable live show turns casual listeners into devoted fans.

Moreover, the fleeting nature of viral hits leaves artists vulnerable if they are not equipped to engage audiences beyond the studio recording.

Managers, therefore, play a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing these skills early in an artist’s career. By prioritizing stagecraft skills, they help artists build a more resilient and versatile career.

Managers must take a proactive approach to developing stagecraft skills in their artists. This includes arranging performance workshops and collaborating with choreographers, vocal coaches, and even acting instructors to enhance their stage presence.

For instance, integrating elements of theater into performances helps artists learn how to tell a story, evoke emotions, and maintain audience engagement throughout their shows.

Additionally, understanding the technical aspects of live performance, such as sound engineering and stage lighting, empowers artists to take control of their performances and create a unique experience for their fans.

Regular practice in front of an audience allows artists to experiment with their style, develop confidence, and refine their craft.

Investing in stagecraft skills not only benefits the artists but also enhances the manager’s portfolio.

A well-rounded performer is more likely to attract lucrative performance opportunities, endorsements, and collaborations.

As audience expectations evolve, the demand for high-quality live performances continues to grow. Artists who deliver captivating shows are more likely to secure spots at major festivals and events, leading to increased visibility and revenue.

The modern music industry demands more than just hit songs; it requires artists to be multifaceted performers capable of captivating audiences.

Managers must recognize their critical role in fostering stagecraft skills alongside musical talent. By prioritizing the development of performance skills, they help their artists achieve lasting success and build a sustainable career in an ever-evolving industry.

The shift from hit-making to holistic grooming not only benefits the artists but also enriches the music landscape, creating a vibrant culture of performance that resonates with audiences worldwide.

As the adage goes, “It’s not just about the music; it’s about the experience.” Embracing this philosophy will ensure that both managers and artists thrive in the dynamic world of entertainment.
