Red carpet events have become a staple in the entertainment industry, with celebrities and VIPs walking the red carpet in their finest attire, posing for photographers, and mingling with the media.
These events are often seen as glamorous and exclusive, with attendees vying for the spotlight and attention of the press. However, in Ghana, red-carpet events do not hold the same level of prestige and importance as they do in other parts of the world.
Ghanaians are known for their laid-back and unassuming nature, and this is reflected in their attitude toward red-carpet events. While these events do take place in Ghana, they are not as widely attended or given as much importance as they are in other countries.
Ghanaians do not place a premium on walking the red carpet or being photographed by the media, and would much rather attend events for the content and experience rather than the glitz and glamour.
One of the reasons for this lack of interest in red-carpet events in Ghana is the cultural emphasis on humility and modesty. Ghanaians value humility and do not believe in flaunting their wealth or status in a public setting.
Walking the red carpet and posing for the cameras is seen as a show of vanity and arrogance, which goes against the cultural norms of society.
Additionally, red-carpet events are often associated with the entertainment industry and celebrities, which does not resonate with the average Ghanaian.
While there are certainly celebrities and public figures in Ghana, the entertainment industry is not as prominent or as idolized as it is in other parts of the world. Ghanaians are mostly not as star-struck or interested in rubbing shoulders with celebrities as people in other countries are.
Furthermore, red-carpet events are often seen as exclusive and elitist, with only a select few being invited to attend. This goes against the inclusive and communal nature of Ghanaian society, where people value inclusivity and togetherness.
Red carpet events are seen as divisive and exclusionary, which could further deter Ghanaians from attending or showing interest in them.
Media personality and broadcaster, Sammy Rasta has urged for a revamp of the red carpet segment of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).
According to him, red carpet events in Ghana, especially the TGMA red carpet, are not respected unlike in other countries, adding that it has made Ghana the subject of ridicule from other countries.
“I think if there is a way to remove the name ‘Red Carpet’ from the red carpet event at the TGMAs, they should. Maybe they should call it a platform for interviews.
“We all have been seeing red carpet events around the world; I don’t know why we are not giving premiums to red carpet events in Ghana.”

It’s important to remember that cultural perspectives and preferences vary widely, and what is valued in one culture does not hold the same significance in another.
Red Carpets, a Collaborative Effort Involving Fashion Expertise
While red carpets are often associated with fashion and the entertainment industry, it’s worth noting that they serve multiple purposes.
Red carpets provide a platform for celebrities, designers, and brands to showcase their fashion choices and make a statement. However, they also serve as a promotional tool for movies, TV shows, and other events.
While fashion experts certainly play a significant role in red carpet events, it’s important to keep in mind that these events are a mix of fashion, entertainment, and public relations. They involve various stakeholders, including actors, directors, producers, and publicists, who all contribute to the overall success of the event.
It’s beneficial to have a balance of fashion expertise and industry knowledge when organizing and running red carpets. Fashion experts offer valuable insights into trends, styles, and designers, ensuring that the event highlights exceptional fashion choices.
However, a diverse range of perspectives is also important to consider the wider context of the event and its goals.
Sammy Rasta stated the red carpets should be a showcase for fashion.
He pointed to the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) as an example, where the red carpet, not the award show itself, became a topic of discussion and trended across the continent.
“Red carpets are supposed to be for fashion. They should collaborate with fashion designers to run that show alone. It should be exclusive. If they continue like this, people will continue to laugh at us, especially the Nigerians.”
Sammy Rasta
Red carpets are a collaborative effort involving fashion experts, event organizers, and industry professionals. By working together, they create memorable experiences that celebrate both fashion and the entertainment industry.
