Musicians Urged to Stop ‘Blabber Music’

Tommy Annan-Forson (TAF)

In recent years, a growing chorus of voices within the music industry has called for a departure from what has been dubbed “blabber music.”

This term refers to songs prioritizing catchy hooks and repetitive lyrics over substantive content and artistic integrity.

Musicians, critics, and fans are urging artists to reflect on the impact of their work and to create music that resonates on a deeper level.

“Blabber music” is often used to describe songs that rely heavily on superficial themes, repetitive phrases, and simplistic melodies.

While catchy tunes have always found a place in popular music, the rise of digital streaming platforms has exacerbated the trend.

With algorithms favoring songs that garner quick listen many artists feel pressured to produce tracks that are instantly digestible but lack depth.

The broadcast legend, Tommy Annan-Forson (TAF), has lamented the state of modern Ghanaian music.

“I virtually don’t listen to our [modern] music because there’s nothing to understand. There’s really nothing to understand [about life from it]. It’s just blabber music. There’s no storyline.”

Tommy Annan-Forson

He identified beyond broadcasters, much of the blame lay with music makers.

“If I tell a musician today to remove these words, he’ll tell me, ‘This is what sells’. It’s like they say in the entertainment industry, it is sex that sells.”

Tommy Annan-Forson

Tommy Annan-Forson cautioned creatives against blindly following the status quo, “and by the time you realize, you’ve ruined your reputation”.

He commended those who were “being wise” about their work, urging an approach that utilized “a clean and educative mind” to enlighten listeners instead of aiming to simply excite.

Musicians and critics are increasingly vocal about their desire for more meaningful content.

The urgency stems from a recognition that music has the power to influence culture, shape societal values, and inspire change.

Artists such as Billie Eilish, Hozier, and Janelle Monáe have been celebrated for their introspective lyrics and socially conscious themes, serving as examples of how music can transcend mere entertainment.

Meaningful Music Impact

The call for musicians to move away from “blabber music” is not just about changing the sound of popular music; it’s about fostering a culture that values authenticity and depth.

When artists create music that reflects genuine experiences, they invite listeners to connect on a more profound level.

Moreover, meaningful music catalyzes social change. Songs that address pressing issues, be it climate change, racial injustice, or mental health awareness, inspire listeners to take action and engage with their communities.

The power of music to mobilize people is evident in movements like Black Lives Matter, where artists have used their platforms to amplify voices and advocate for justice.

The multiple award-winning cross-generational radio talent and educator underlined that “music tells a story”.

“When I play Country music, I’m telling a story about myself and the listener,” the broadcaster nicknamed the King of Country explained.

“When I play a particular Country song that makes my heart beat or skip a beat, I know that the listener will like this. It has a good storyline line, it affects you and I.”

Several musicians are leading the charge against “blabber music” by prioritizing substance in their work.

Kendrick Lamar stands out as one of the most impactful voices in hip-hop today. His albums, particularly “To Pimp a Butterfly” and “DAMN.,” tackle complex themes such as race, identity, and resilience.

Lamar’s storytelling ability and commitment to addressing societal issues have solidified his place as a leading figure in the movement toward meaningful music.

As the music industry continues to evolve, the call for artists to abandon “blabber music” in favor of more meaningful content is gaining momentum.

Musicians are encouraged to reflect on their creative choices and consider the impact of their work on listeners and society as a whole. By prioritizing substance over superficiality, artists create a legacy that inspires, educates, and uplifts.

In a world often filled with noise, the call for meaningful artistry is a reminder of the profound connection that music fosters—one that transcends mere entertainment and speaks to the human experience.
