Ghanaian music sensation, Joel Ofori Bonsu, better known by the stage name OliveTheBoy has revealed a touching dynamic in his relationship with his father, who happens to be a Presbyterian pastor.

Despite occupying different spheres, spirituality, and music, OliveTheBoy shared that his father not only supports his musical pursuits but genuinely loves his songs.

The ‘Goodsin’ hitmaker made known that he comes from a very disciplined and principled family with his mother being a teacher and father being a man of God.

Due to their religious background, the crooner averred that he initially faced resistance from his family when he embarked on his musical journey. There were expectations for him to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career on the pulpit.

However, he found his passion in music, which initially caused some friction within his family.

“My parents initially did not support me when I started music. When I dropped my first song, I was supposed to be in school by then. My mum called me and asked why I used my class period to record music, she wanted to get me arrested. You know people have the perception that students who pursue music after completing school are ‘koborlor’.”

As his music made airwaves, OliveTheBoy stated that his father started developing a fondness for his music, with his favorite being his breakthrough song, ‘Goodsin’.

On the other hand, OliveTheBoy’s mother also softened as she witnessed her son’s dedication and talent in the industry. She even attended one of his concerts and enthusiastically joined him on stage.

Currently, OliveTheBoy mentioned that his parents are supportive, but have given him restrictions on lifestyles to pursue and things that are out of bounds.

Afrobeats singer and songwriter, OliveTheBoy disclosed how a bitter relationship led him to compose his new single ‘Asylum’.

OliveTheBoy mentioned that the song which was released on March 1, this year had even existed before his hit track ‘Goodsin.’

The musician explained that the song was inspired by a broken heart from his ex-girlfriend which happened two years ago, adding that he was compelled to compose a song about his bitter experience due to his strong affection for the lady whose name he did not reveal.

“I felt like I needed to write a song about it because I was really in love with the girl. Charley, you cannot trust human beings so it was just like a message to the girl and me trying to [console myself]. I lef am, she’s there and I do not know her whereabouts. I do hear from her sometimes and she wants to come back.”

“There are many fishes in the sea,” the afrobeat singer quickly replied when asked if he would get back together with his ex-girlfriend.

Meanwhile, OliveTheBoy raised concerns about his nominations for the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

The ‘Goodsin’ hitmaker received three nominations for this year’s TGMA. They include: Best New Artiste of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, and Best Afrobeats Song of the Year.

He disclosed that his management presented a petition to the scheme to be considered for the Album/EP and Best Afrobeats Artiste of the Year categories.

“I think there are these two that I feel like I should have been in. The EP/Album of the Year because ‘Goodsin’ was an EP and Afrobeats artiste of the year. We have actually presented a petition so [ we are on the lookout],” he said.

Robert Klah, the Public Relations Officer for Charterhouse, organisers of the Ghana Music Awards urged artists who might be worried about their nominations to seek clarification from the scheme.
