Ruger Slams Nigerian Music Industry

Ruger

Multi-talented singer, Ruger has expressed how deeply hurt he is by the state of Nigerian music where talent has now taken a back seat.

In a post on his X account, Ruger shared that the Nigerian music scene is hurting from the prioritization of money over talent, as artists with the resources to promote their work heavily get success more than talented ones. “The music scene has been hurting me coz no matter how shit an artist is, once there’s money for hype, Otilo,” the tweet reads.

Ruger’s sentiments on the state of Nigerian music have been shared by other artists, like BNXN, who have complained about the minimal attention talented artists get.

The current state of the Nigerian music industry has been a subject of debate in 2024. Several commentators have suggested that the industry is in a state of diminishing return with a handful of hit records and the absence of an emphatic breakout star.

Some of these issues have been credited to the huge cost of music promotion which is at an all-time high thanks to Afrobeat’s global exportation.

Timaya recently complained about the high cost of shooting music videos which now goes as high as 100 million Naira.

In another post on X, Ruger talked tough on statgemanship which he credits for making him a highly booked artist.

“Let me explain to you why I get booked so much. I don’t come on stage to sing (of which I know I’m so good at) I bring my whole fucking personality on stage it’s not a joke.”

Ruger also revealed the name for his upcoming sophomore album which he has decided to call ‘Blown Boy’.

The singer is set to continue preparing for his next album with the release of a new single ‘Toma Toma’ on November 15, 2024.

Ruger Shares Thoughts on Autotune, Live Performances

Davido, Angelique Kidjo, and Ruger

Michael Adebayo Olayinka, professionally known as Ruger, recently threw a subtle jab at popular singer, Davido.

In a recent post on X, Ruger shared his thoughts on the use of autotune in live performances.

He humorously addressed the topic, stating that he doesn’t need autotune, and poked fun at artists who do.

Ruger’s comments came after a video of Davido’s performance with Angelique Kidjo went viral, with some viewers criticizing the use of autotune.

“Now, let’s talk about the gaddamn autotunes on the mic when y’all perform😂😂😂. Next time, tell your engineer to shut it down when you’re about to speak coz you be speaking in Tunez wahalaaaaaa. Well, Ruger doesn’t need that shit. thank you ❤️.”

Ruger

While Ruger didn’t directly mention Davido, his tweets were connected to the performance by online users.

“Facts! 😂 Nothing more awkward than hearing someone’s ‘autotune voice’ during a live performance. A little authenticity goes a long way! Ruger keeps it real without relying on all that extra tuning—just pure, raw talent. Love to see artists who sound as good live as they do in the studio. 🔥.”

@AfrokonnectNG

“You don sub osapkolor like this ooo na why Wizkid talk say he just get ‘yes men’ wey go dey hype am even with his wack songs🤣🤣🤣.”

@NuJhayhne

“Lmaooo since your first stage performance in 2021! I knew this guy has never needed an auto-tune.”

@Freyy_is

“Na frogido sub be this😭😭 thank God the media casted him a few days ago, he no get a good voice at all😭.”

@NuJhayhne

“Only me, Ruger, and Wizkid sabi sing without autotunes for this industry.”

@Mich__Alex

“This pattern of faux-beef before a new release is getting stale 🤦‍♂.”
