Award-winning comedian, Trevor Noah has used his show ‘The Daily Show’ to chide the policing system in the U.S following the death of a young man, Daunte Wright.
The 20-year-old black-American was fatally shot by a police officer who claimed that it was an “accidental discharge” as she mistook her gun for a taser.
Speaking on ‘The Daily Show’, Trevor expressed his thoughts on the police and how these devastating “mistakes” continue because of alleged trigger-happy behavior.
“You have to be kidding me. A man was shot at a traffic stop because the police officer mixed up their gun and their taser? Is that even supposed to be a legitimate excuse?”
He further said, “Look, I am not saying tragic mistakes will never happen, what I am saying is that maybe if the police weren’t so quick to draw any weapon, then maybe people wouldn’t die”.
Trevor, who made an appearance in ‘Coming 2 America’, went on to say the system continues to fail victims of police brutality as no progress on charges have been made.
“They don’t care if you’re recording them. They don’t even care they’re recording themselves. And the reason they don’t care is that they know they’re going to get away with it. And until that changes, they’re just going to keep not caring”.
Trevor Noah isn’t one to shy away from discussing emotionally charged issues;on his show, as he has not kept his opinions on the police to himself. It can be recalled that last year, after the death of George Floyd at the hands of;law enforcement, Trevor opened up about the realities of being black in America.
Officer Kim Potter resigns
Meanwhile, the officer who shot Daunte Wright, Kim Potter;has resigned from her post as well as the city’s police chief, Tim Gannon.
Body-camera footage released on Monday shows that Potter apparently meant to fire her Taser but accidentally pulled her service weapon instead. Potter abruptly resigned on Tuesday, writing in a brief letter to city;officials her immediate departure was “in the best interest of the community”. Moments later during a news conference at City Hall, Mayor Mike Elliott;announced that Police Chief Tim Gannon had also resigned.
That aside, the shooting has heightened tensions in an area already on edge. Ten miles from where the shooting happened in Minneapolis, is the murder trial of the police officer who murdered George Floyd, Derek Chauvin.
Nonetheless, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama in a statement on Wright’s death Tuesday underscored that reality. The couple wrote in a statement released through the Obama Foundation stating:
“Our hearts are heavy over yet another shooting of a Black man, Daunte Wright, at the hands of police. The fact it could happen during the Chauvin trial as Minneapolis is going through the trialof Derek Chauvin and reliving the heart-wrenching murder George Floyd’s indicates not just how important it is to conduct a full and transparent investigation, but also just how badly we need to re-imagine policing and public safety in this country”.
