Illegal Mining In Ghana

Commenting on the recent anti-galamsey demonstrations, Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has expressed a critical view of the government’s response to the ongoing issue of illegal mining.

Franklin Cudjoe stated that, ordinarily, it should not take yet another demonstration for the government to take decisive action.

He indicated that the detrimental effects of illegal mining have been widely recognized, with numerous individuals, organizations, and experts speaking out and publishing reports on its devastating impact on the environment, local communities, and the economy.

“How did the president respond this time? By setting up the weakest committee ever to go over many wasting hours of lamentations when more persuasive and punitive recommendations from earlier commissioned inquiries could have been activated”.

Franklin Cudjoe

As such, Cudjoe emphasized that the urgency of this crisis necessitates proactive measures rather than reactive responses.

Thus, the recurring need for demonstrations highlights a significant gap between public concern and governmental action, underscoring the need for accountability and effective policy implementation in addressing the illegal mining crisis.

Franklin Cudjoe further highlighted that one significant report submitted by the dismissed Minister for Science and Environment, Dr. Frimpong Boateng, boldly identified politically exposed individuals and government-backed kingpins involved in illegal mining.

He indicated that this report brought crucial attention to the deep-rooted connections between illegal mining activities and those in positions of power.

Franklin Cudjoe noted that unfortunately, the government has disregarded this report, failing to acknowledge its important findings.

Additionally, he indicated that the character of its author has been unjustly maligned by members of the ruling party and individuals entrenched in the galamsey operations.

The Policy Analyst stated that such actions not only undermine the credibility of the findings but also reflect a troubling disregard for accountability in addressing the illegal mining crisis.

He maintained that by this action, the government sends a clear message that it is unwilling to confront the powerful interests intertwined with illegal mining activities.

Stakeholders Reject Ineffective Presidential Committee

Furthermore, Franklin Cudjoe stated that it is no wonder many serious stakeholders have openly declared their refusal to engage with the ineffective committee established by the president.

He pointed out that these actors see through the charade and recognize that the committee lacks the necessary authority and commitment to effect meaningful change.

Franklin Cudjoe also lamented that the president is not even making an effort to maintain the appearance of honoring his own sworn promise to put his presidency on the line to tackle the deliberately orchestrated mess surrounding illegal mining.

According to him, this lack of genuine leadership and accountability has led to widespread disillusionment among those who genuinely want to see progress in addressing this critical issue. As a result, the absence of credible action from the government only reinforces the belief that real change is unlikely to occur under the current circumstances.

“Where in the world is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate in on all the comedy of errors? Anyone heard or seen the two campaigning to be bold with bold solutions for the future demand or suggest how we tackle arguably the second most devastating creation with lasting impact on the living and the unborn…”

Franklin Cudjoe

He indicated that this galamsey crisis has emerged in the wake of the most severe economic ruin and escalating poverty the country has experienced in half a century.

The devastation wrought by illegal mining has compounded existing struggles, further destabilizing communities that are already grappling with unemployment and declining living standards.

Accordingly, Franklin Cudjoe remarked, “What a mess!”, expressing the frustration and disillusionment felt by many as they witness the chaotic state of affairs surrounding the illegal mining crisis.

Cudjoe also underscored the urgent need for comprehensive reform and accountability to rectify the situation and restore hope to the affected population.
