Ghana Armed Forces and Police Service Assure Peaceful 2024 Elections

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service have jointly assured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and security during the December 2024 general elections.

With backing from other security agencies, Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa, the Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized that the GAF would safeguard Ghana’s borders against external threats before, during, and after the elections.

In a recent meeting with the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Lieutenant General Akwa stressed the importance of security and stability during the electoral process.

“We want to assure our father and everyone that together, we will continue to maintain the peace and security of this country.

“We will continue to perform our duties as the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure that this country’s safety, stability, and peace are all well maintained, and we will need his prayers in this direction.”

Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa, the Chief of Defense Staff

Ghana has a history of peaceful elections, which is a testament to the effective collaboration between security agencies and electoral bodies. The upcoming 2024 elections are expected to follow this tradition, with increased vigilance and preparedness from the security forces.

Both the GAF and the Police Service have extensive experience in handling election-related security, having successfully managed previous elections.

The Chief of Defense Staff further reiterated, “As we prepare for this year’s elections, we want to assure everyone in Ghana that we will play our role professionally to ensure that peace and security are maintained.”

Echoing these sentiments, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, pledged that the security agencies would act professionally to ensure that the 2024 elections are peaceful and incident-free. Dr. Dampare highlighted that under his tenure, elections have consistently been peaceful, and he is committed to maintaining this record for the upcoming polls.

“We want to assure my sister (EC Chairperson) that we will continue to work with my colleagues here to ensure that just as elections in the country since I took over have been peaceful, the 2024 polls will be the same.”

Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, Inspector-General of Police

The National Election Security Task Force, a multi-agency body, plays a crucial role in coordinating efforts to ensure a peaceful electoral process. The task force comprises representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, and other security agencies.

The primary objective of the task force is to develop and implement strategies to mitigate potential threats and maintain public order during the elections.

The assurances from the Chief of Defense Staff and the Inspector-General of Police are aimed at bolstering public confidence in the electoral process. By emphasizing professionalism and a commitment to peace, the security agencies are seeking to reassure the public that their votes will be cast in a safe and secure environment.

Public support and cooperation are vital in ensuring the success of the security measures. The security agencies have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. This collaborative approach between the security forces and the public is essential for maintaining peace and stability.

The meeting with the National Chief Imam underscores the significance of spiritual support in maintaining national peace and unity. Lieutenant General Akwa’s request for prayers highlights the role of religious and community leaders in fostering a peaceful atmosphere.

The Chief Imam’s endorsement of the security agencies’ efforts further strengthens the collective resolve to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The assurances from Lieutenant General Akwa and Dr. Dampare signal a proactive and coordinated approach to election security.

The public can take confidence in the professional conduct and dedication of the security forces. With comprehensive plans and strategies in place, Ghana is well-prepared to conduct another peaceful and orderly election, reinforcing its reputation as a stable democracy in the region.

The commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to ensuring a peaceful electoral process is a positive indication of the country’s readiness for the December 2024 general elections. Their professionalism, coupled with public cooperation and spiritual support, will be key to maintaining peace and stability during this critical period.
