The Democracy Hub has announced its plans to picket at the Jubilee House from 1st December to 31st December to demand that President Akufo-Addo resign.

The Democracy Hub, which is the Convener of the #FixTheCountry movement and #OccupyJubileeHouse announced the intention in a press statement.

According to the Hub, the President has demonstrated incompetence in his stewardship of the country.

“Democracy, Hub, the Convener of the #FixTheCountry movement and #OccupyJubilleeHouse protest wishes to notify the public of its intentions to hold a picketing event this December from 1st December to 31st December 2023 at the Jubilee House.

“Democracy hub believes that the President’s stewardship of this country demonstrates incompetence, a lack of integrity, routine abuse of power, and greed. We are perturbed by high levels of persistent unemployment among the youth; and the level of economic mismanagement that has jeopardized the future of young people as well as pushed nearly a million Ghanaians into poverty.”

Democracy Hub

Also, the Hub stated that the picketing will be a demonstration against deteriorating press freedom, extra judicial killings and the prosecution of activists.

The picketing is dubbed #OccupyJubileeHouse and #JustResign. According to the group, if the President refuses to resign, he will be impeached by the Parliament.

“The picket, themed #OccupyJubileeHouse and #JustResign, will call on the President of Ghana to resign immediately or be impeached by Parliament.”

More so, the group is calling for the prosecution of corrupt government officials.

“We demand the urgent prosecution of corrupt officials, including persons in the president’s family and inner circle who have contributed to what has been described by a former cabinet Minister as “a Friends, family, and Concubines Government.”

In addition, the organizers of the demonstration said, the demonstration will be an avenue to educate the public on its advocacy for a New Constitution.

“The protest will also serve to educate Ghanaians on our enduring advocacy for a New Constitution for a New Generation. We believe in progressive Constitutional reforms that will provide a better framework for social equity and economic justice for our people as well as help confront the abuse of power and impunity more quickly.”

The picket will be held at the Jubilee House, specifically at the publicly accessible side facing Liberation Street

Democracy Hub’s Profile

Democracy Hub has pledged to establish extensive picketing guidelines to ensure a smooth and peaceful event. According to the group, informational sessions will be conducted to educate the public about these guidelines.

Democracy Hub is a civil society organization committed to promoting democratic values, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in Ghana. The Hub advocates for the rights and duties enshrined in the 1992 Constitution and works to ensure that those principles are upheld by the government and public officials. The organization is committed to upholding the principles of the rule of law and constitutional accountability.

Popularly, the Democracy Hub is known for organizing the #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJubileeHouse demonstrations.

Recently, during the #OccupyJulibeeHouseProtest, some members of the demonstration were arrested following a police order barring any such gathering. Many Ghanaians condemned the arrest which sparked a wider base of support for the group and its protest. The group protested the next day as scheduled, even amidst rainfall.

Even though they were unable to reach their desired destination, their demonstration received significant support, particularly online. Conveners of the demonstration promised to return with another protest to press the government to respond to their demands.

Both demonstrations were all organized under the Akufo-Addo government, calling on the government to address economic challenges.
