The member of the National Communication Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Akua Amoako expressed strong disapproval of what she termed as “double standards” and “diversionary tactics” being employed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their political discourse.
She made it clear that the NDC’s approach lacks substance and is geared more towards distracting the electorate rather than offering any viable policies for national development. Dr. Amoako opened her statement by criticizing what she saw as hypocrisy and inconsistency in the NDC’s behavior. She referred to the party’s history, particularly its origins in the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era, noting that the party had seized power through undemocratic means. She emphasized the irony of the NDC’s recent criticisms of government appointments, reminding Ghanaians that former President Jerry John Rawlings had appointed key figures during his regime, including Supreme Court judges.
“The double standard and the behavior coming out of the NDC, I can’t even find a civil word to use. I find it completely laughable because we’ve been in this country before. Even if we were not particularly alive at the beginning, there’s a lot of written history. So, we know what happened.”

Dr. Amoako pointed out that many people may have forgotten or were too young to remember a military coup. She criticized the NDC for failing to acknowledge this fact when attacking current political processes.
“After the PNDC at that time took over this country by force if we all remember… It took over this country by force. In 1992, when they decided to return us to democratic rule, the EC at that time was then not appointed by then President Rawlings. Did he not appoint everybody? Did he not appoint all the Supreme Court judges in 96? Wasn’t it the same?”

NDC’s “Politics of Distraction”
Dr. Amoako went on to accuse the NDC of deliberately shifting focus from substantive national issues to petty distractions. According to her, the NDC’s strategy in the ongoing campaign has been primarily aimed at criticizing the electoral process and other institutions, rather than offering constructive policy alternatives.
“All they are trying to do is more diversionary tactics. Since this campaign started, all they’ve done is do the politics of distractions, what we like to call chief communist tactics. I mean, what’s the issue here?”

She emphasized that if the NDC had any legitimate concerns, they should raise them clearly and constructively. However, she expressed skepticism, suggesting that the opposition party was more focused on creating a false narrative about impending electoral defeat rather than engaging in meaningful dialogue about national development. “If the issue, you have concrete problems, you have legitimate issues, bring it out, and let’s rectify it,” Dr. Amoako urged, stressing the importance of focusing on real issues rather than unsubstantiated allegations. Dr. Amoako was quick to clarify that the party had no intention of engaging in any dishonest practices.
“There’s no attempt by the NPP on any grounds at all to do anything untoward in this election. We know we have a superior message, and so there’s no need to engage in all of this.”

She emphasized that the NPP was committed to ensuring a free and fair election and that their goal was to win based on the strength of their ideas and policies. According to her, the NDC’s criticisms of the Electoral Commission (EC) were merely an attempt to discredit the electoral process because they sensed impending defeat.
“We want to win these elections free and fair, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen. So if in typical fashion, you feel like you are losing, and all you can do is throw stones at the referee, I would urge my brothers and sisters on the side of the NDC to engage in more constructive arguments.”

Dr. Amoako called on the NDC to engage in more meaningful discussions about the issues that matter most to Ghanaians. She pointed out that the NPP had consistently offered clear policies and solutions, while the NDC had not yet articulated a coherent vision for the country. Her appeal was for the opposition to abandon its “politics of distraction” and focus on the real concerns of the people.
“Let’s discuss issues and what they have for the people of Ghana,” Dr. Amoako said, underscoring the need for a more mature and policy-driven campaign from all political parties.
Dr. Amoako’s sharp critique of the NDC highlighted the growing tensions between Ghana’s two major political parties as the nation approaches critical elections. Her insistence on a fair electoral process and constructive dialogue reflects the NPP’s confidence in their platform, while her condemnation of the NDC’s tactics points to a broader concern about the level of political discourse in the country. As both parties continue their campaigns, the call for substantive debate and issue-based politics remains a crucial one for Ghana’s democracy.
Dr. Amoako emphasized that appointing EC officials has always been a presidential responsibility enshrined in the constitution and that any claims of illegality regarding such appointments are baseless. Dr. Amoako expressed frustration at what she viewed as the NDC’s tactics of attempting to discredit the EC because of their fear of losing the upcoming elections. She described the party’s behavior as “chief communist tactics” meant to distract the public from their lack of clear policy direction.
Addressing the Pusiga Incident
Dr. Amoako responded to concerns about irregularities in the Pusiga constituency.
“In Pusiga, someone took voter ID cards from about 30 people and transferred the votes from Tamale and Sanarigu. This happened after the EC’s audit, and they were able to find the issue.”

She dismissed the idea that the NPP would benefit from this, noting that the affected constituencies are strongholds of the NDC. Dr. Amoako reiterated that the purpose of the voters’ exhibition process is to identify and resolve such issues before the final register is released.
Dr. Amoako challenged the NDC to present evidence of any issues they had discovered, stating that legitimate concerns should be brought forward to ensure a credible election process. Dr. Amoako stressed the importance of trust in the electoral system. She acknowledged that for democracy to function effectively, the public must have confidence that their votes will count and that the electoral system is credible. She noted; “The goal of the electoral exercise is for people to believe in it. People have to believe that their vote counts. They have to believe that the system is credible.” She urged the NDC to use the established channels, such as the voters’ exhibition process, to resolve any remaining issues and to stop undermining the credibility of the EC without sufficient evidence. Dr. Amoako’s message was clear, the NPP seeks to win the election fairly, and attempts to distract from policy discussions and discredit the electoral process are not in the best interest of the country’s democracy.
