The Director of Communications for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has vehemently denounced allegations made by Nana Ohene Ntow, the former General Secretary and ex-member of the ruling party, accusing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of failing to manage Ghana’s economy.
The ruling party’s national officer in a statement rebutting Nana Ohene Ntow’s allegations against the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, argued that the claims made by the former General Secretary and ex-member of the ruling party are not borne out of fact but a misconception.
Mr Ahiagbah began by affirming that the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s competence in managing Ghana’s economy is beyond question.
He argued that the current economic challenges facing the country are not a result of the mismanagement of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia but rather due to the impact of some external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
These events, Mr Ahiagbah argued, have had significant global economic repercussions and should not be seen as a reflection of Dr Bawumia’s economic management abilities.
“It would be beneficial for Nana Ohene-Ntow to revisit economic data from 2017, 2018, and 2019, when the economy was growing at an average of 7% before the impact of COVID-19. This would provide a more accurate assessment of the current government’s economic management record.”

This period of robust growth, according to Mr Ahiagbah, is a more accurate indicator of the government’s economic management capabilities, before what he described as the unprecedented disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Addressing Allegations of Corruption
Furthermore, the Director of Communications of the ruling New Patriotic Party refuted the former General Secretary and ex-member of the ruling party, Nana Ohene Ntow’s assertion that corruption has worsened under the current administration.
Mr Ahiagbah stressed that such claims are subjective, and highlighted the importance of due process and the legal system in addressing allegations of corruption by the New Patriotic Party administration led by President Akufo-Addo.
He cautioned against concluding without conclusive legal judgments, adding that “corruption allegations are serious, but they must be handled within the country’s legal framework”.
Mr Ahiagbah further asserted that it is “premature and unfair’ to declare institutions more corrupt without conclusive evidence from legal authorities or investigative reports.
Role of Digitalization in Economic Growth
Addressing the criticism that digitalization alone cannot drive the country’s entire economy, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s Director of Communications underscored the significant role digitalization plays in modern economic development.
He highlighted the numerous benefits digitalization championed by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia under the New Patriotic Party administration has brought to various sectors, contributing to overall economic growth and efficiency.
“While digitalization is not the sole component of economic strategy, its impact on economic growth and prosperity is undeniable. It is a critical driver in today’s economy”.
Richard Ahiagbah, NPP’s Director of Communications
In his closing remarks, the Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah expressed respect for Alan Kyerematen and his campaign, despite the differences in support within the party.
He admonished the former General Secretary and ex-member of the ruling party, currently a leading member of Mr Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change to refrain from unwarranted attacks against the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Mr Ahiagbah emphasised the New Patriotic Party’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and constructive discourse ahead of the upcoming December general elections and demanded same from the supporters of Mr Alan Kyerematen.
