President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming general elections.
In a powerful speech delivered at the NPP’s final rally at the University of Ghana Sports Park in Legon, Greater Accra, on December 5, 2024, the President expressed full confidence that Dr. Bawumia is the right leader to continue the progress the country has made under his administration.
“Dr. Bawumia has shown that he has the vision, knowledge, and leadership to steer this country towards prosperity,” President Akufo-Addo stated. The President pointed to Bawumia’s pivotal role in stabilizing the national economy after the NDC administration’s tenure, calling it a testament to his capability and foresight.
Akufo-Addo’s remarks were particularly aimed at assuring Ghanaians that Dr. Bawumia is not only capable of leading the country forward but also of building upon the NPP’s successes in areas such as education, healthcare, and the business environment.
During his speech, Akufo-Addo underscored Dr. Bawumia’s extensive experience in public service, highlighting his significant contributions as an economist and his instrumental role in the NPP’s economic management team.
He stated that the former President John Dramani Mahama had demonstrated little capacity to address the pressing issues facing Ghanaians during his time in office, casting doubt on his ability to provide solutions if re-elected.
“John Mahama’s record is one of failure,” President Akufo-Addo declared. “He presided over a collapsing economy, failed infrastructure projects, and rising unemployment. His return to power would only take us backwards.”
One of the key policies that President Akufo-Addo highlighted was the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, a cornerstone of his administration’s education policy. The program, launched in 2017, has provided free education for hundreds of thousands of Ghanaian students, ensuring that financial barriers no longer prevent students from accessing quality education.
“Let’s not make a mistake on Saturday. He [Mahama] doesn’t like Free SHS and his hostility towards it has been consistent.
“He waged a campaign against it when we first promised it in 2008 and will cancel it when voted.”

Akufo-Addo also cited the expansion of healthcare infrastructure and efforts to improve the business climate as other notable achievements of his government. He emphasized that these initiatives have laid the groundwork for a more prosperous and equitable Ghana, and Dr. Bawumia is the ideal candidate to continue the momentum.
He said, “Dr. Bawumia is the person who can take Ghana to the next level,” and urged Ghanaians to vote for the NPP to ensure the continued development of the nation. The President pointed out that the NPP’s track record, coupled with Dr. Bawumia’s vision, makes the party the most capable of securing Ghana’s future.
“We have achieved a lot under my administration, but there’s still more to be done. Dr. Bawumia is the right person to carry the torch and build on the successes we’ve achieved.”

Former President Kufuor’s Support for Dr. Bawumia
The final rally also saw the strong backing of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who made an impassioned call for Ghanaians, especially the youth, to support Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Kufuor emphasized the importance of voting for a leader who understands the transformative power of digitalization and technology.
He stressed that digitalization could revolutionize Ghana’s economy, creating opportunities for growth, development, and innovation. “The future is in your hands, you have to make the right decision to choose your leader,” Kufuor said, urging the youth to vote wisely and embrace a future powered by technology and digital solutions.
In his address, Kufuor also emphasized the need for unity within the NPP, calling on party members to forgive one another and rally behind Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.
He urged Ghanaians to recognize that the NPP has a strong track record of governing and delivering for the people, particularly in comparison to the opposition, and that under Dr. Bawumia, the country would continue on its upward trajectory.
Both Akufo-Addo and Kufuor’s speeches were aimed at motivating Ghanaians to re-elect the NPP in the upcoming elections. The rally, held at the University of Ghana, marked the culmination of a nationwide campaign designed to showcase the party’s achievements and present Dr. Bawumia as the best candidate to lead the nation forward.
As the nation prepares for the elections, the messages from President Akufo-Addo and former President Kufuor underscored the importance of electing a leader who not only understands the needs of the people but has the experience and vision to navigate the complex challenges ahead.
With the support of key political figures and a clear platform for the future, the NPP is positioned itself as the party that can continue driving Ghana’s success in the coming years.
