All African Games: Calls for Accountability Rise Amidst Staggering Expenditures

All Africans Games

In the aftermath of Ghana’s hosting of the 13th All African Games, a storm of controversy has erupted over the alleged mismanagement of funds allocated for the prestigious sporting event.

With accusations swirling and figures being thrown around, the clamour for transparency and accountability has reached a crescendo, echoing throughout the corridors of power and resonating deeply within the hearts of concerned citizens.

While the total cost for hosting the tournament is not yet disclosed by the government, the Minister of Youth and Sport, Mustapha Ussif earlier revealed that the facilities built to host the 2023 African Games cost the country over $195 million.

He disclosed that the Borteyman Sports Complex, which was constructed by Contracta Construction UK Limited, cost $145, 086,057.54, while  Consar Limited’s University of Ghana Stadium cost $34,102,135 with the Games Village, given to Mawums Limited, also costing the country $16,066,961.20.

Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the ruling government of mismanaging the affairs of the organisation of the just-ended 13th All African Games that was hosted by the country.

The Caucus in a press conference accused the ruling government of spending a staggering expenditure of $240 million under shady circumstances.

In light of these damning revelations, the Minority Caucus called for a bipartisan parliamentary probe into the budget and expenditure for the preparation and organization of the games.

Ghanaians React To 13th All African Games Expenditures

Prominent voices from various sectors of society have joined the chorus of discontent, amplifying the urgency for transparency and accountability.

Ghanaian political commentator and Founding President of the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe, reacting to the issues, voiced his concerns regarding the expenditure of over $200 million on the recently concluded 13th All African Games hosted by Ghana.

According to Mr Cudjoe, the expenditure of over $200 million raises pertinent questions about fiscal responsibility and accountability.

He thus emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny of the expenses incurred during the Games, urging the government to provide a detailed breakdown of how the funds were utilized.

“Congrats to Ghana again for successfully hosting the 13th All-African Games. I hear already Ghana is being beckoned to host a similar event in 2026. Please let us first discuss how we spent over $200 on the Games”.

Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President IMANI Africa

Similarly, seasoned Ghanaian Sports Journalist, Gary Al-Smith, has rallied his colleagues in the media fraternity to demand answers regarding the allocation and expenditure of funds for hosting the All African Games.

With a resolute tone, Mr Al-Smith emphasized the importance of holding authorities accountable, highlighting the necessity of critical scrutiny in ensuring judicious use of public resources.

Refusing to be swayed by potential accusations of negativity, Mr Al-Smith underlined the obligation of journalists to uphold their duty to the nation, stressing the importance of upholding journalistic integrity in the pursuit of accountability.

“Let nobody gaslight us into thinking we did the country a disservice by being critical. We have dragged the authorities since 2021/22 because we had to and we have been vindicated far more than we got wrong. Should we follow the same modus again if we have the chance? Absolutely.

“Indeed, we must now move into accountability mode as soon as possible and find out if the resources allocated were spent judiciously. They will say we are being negative. That is okay, let’s wear the badge with pride”

It is important to state that the calls for a thorough investigation into the budget and expenditure for the organization of the 13th All African Games underscores the gravity of the situation.

In a country plagued by a history of political leaders exploiting opportunities to plunder and misuse public funds, such scrutiny is not only warranted but imperative for upholding the principles of good governance and safeguarding the interests of the Ghanaian people.

It is therefore imperative that the government take immediate steps to investigate how funds were allocated and utilized for the 13th All-African Games.

Failure to heed these calls risks eroding public trust, which will further foster a cycle of impunity, undermining the very fabric of democracy.
