The New Patriotic Party (NPP) branch in the Ashanti Region has called on the Ghana Police Service to, as a matter of urgency, arrest the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Nana Akwasi for making “treasonable” remark.
The party deemed the comment made by the NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman treasonable offence for addressing candidate John Mahama as “the president-elect”.
This reaction follows the release of a letter signed by the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Kwame Zu in announcing the arrival of the former president in the Ashanti Region with the caption “President-elect”, a title contrary to the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
Augustus Nana Akwasi confirmed the origin of the letter and also reiterated on live radio in an interview saying “Yes, I signed the letter”.
The First Vice Chairman of NPP in the Ashanti Region, Kwabena Nsenkyire, has urged the Ghana Police Service to do the needful by arresting the NDC leader for such treasonable comments.
Mr. Kwabena Nsenkyire says the leadership of NDC in the Region has been inciting their followers since the declaration of the December 7 election results with their worse being the description of the former president as “the president-elect”.

“There’s only one president-elect of the Republic of Ghana, any other pronouncement or declaration is tantamount to treason. So I don’t know why after making such comments, he is walking freely. The police and other security agencies must arrest such people.”
Meanwhile, the leadership of the NDC in the Region and across the country believes their presidential candidate in the just-ended elections won the presidential race but the NPP through the Electoral Commission rigged the election in its favor.
According to the party, intense and continue protests will compel the EC to come out with what they describe as real declaration of the 2020 elections.
The NDC in recent times embarked on a number of street protests to re-echo the party’s rejection of the declared 2020 presidential election results.
Concurrently, the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress has advised the leadership of the party to take legitimate steps in reversing the declared results of the just ended general elections.
The leadership of the party in a meeting with the Council of Elders of the party on Monday, December 14, 2020, discussed the post-declaration uprising and issued a press statement signed by the Deputy General Secretary of the party, Peter Boamah Otokunor to that effect.
Per the release, the party indicated that “they [Council of Elders] equally expressed serious misgivings over the apparent flawed collation processes employed by the EC in the Parliamentary and Presidential elections and discredited declaration of the Presidential results whose figures have been changed on a number of occasions.
“The Council of Elders advised the party to take all legitimate steps to reverse the subversion of the people’s will in order to obtain a just, free, and fair outcome in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.” The statement added.
