The People’s National Convention (PNC) has described the election of Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a Guinness World Record in the history of the party.
According to the party, the move by the NPP is laudable. It further extended congratulatory message to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for conducting its presidential primaries over the weekend.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for successfully conducting internal party elections and for the election of the Vice President, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a candidate. This step sets a Guinness World Record in your party’s history.”
People’s National Convention
Contained in a statement dated November 6, 2023, signed by PNC’s General Secretary, Janet Asana Nabla, the PNC admitted that though its ideology differs from the NPP’s, actively engaging in participatory democracy is what exemplifies party politics.
To this end, it declared that all four aspirants “demonstrated maturity, and we commend the party for this”.
“As an opposition political party, we believe in healthy competition and policy base case campaign which will bring a positive impact on our nation… Once again, congratulations to you and your party for successfully holding a peaceful internal election.

Furthermore, the PNC expressed the need for the competition ahead to be “spirited yet civil”, inspiring the nation with a commitment to democracy and a brighter future for the country.
NMC demands apology from Power FM to Samira Bawumia
Meanwhile, National Media Commission (NMC) has directed Power FM to tender an unreserved apology to the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, for broadcasting derogatory comments against her and the Fulani community in Ghana.
The NMC recounted that on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Power FM allowed its station to be used as the medium for gender-based insult on H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia, wife of Dr Bawumia in a “perverted and debased” broadcast.
Additionally, it noted that the show equally sought to denigrate the entire Fulani Community in Ghana and incite ethnic tension. Such behaviour, NMC stated, has no place in its search for national cohesion, peace and development.
Moreover, NMC expressed that the presenter’s “phoney” protestation was “unprofessional and deceitfully” calculated to egg the commentator on. Instead of being a moderator, it highlighted that the presenter became a “cheerleader for obscenity”.
“We ask you to apologise to H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia and the Fulani Community. We additionally ask that you apologise to the Ghanaian public whose sensibilities you breached by that broadcast.”
National Media Commission
Furthermore, the NMC noted that it expects the radio station to undertake the apology to the Second Lady and present evidence of same to the Commission before November 11, 2023, after which date Power FM may hear further from the Commission.
It will be recalled that former deputy minister of information, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, expressed his reservation about some comments made against the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia by a member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team.
He revealed that although the person in question made some unprintable comments about Mrs Bawumia, she should also learn that “politics is not a picnic in the park”, as such, when she goes hurling pebbles at people, she should expect that rocks will be hurled at her.
Furthermore, Mr Ofosu stated that one of the things that has come to define Ghanaian campaigns is that there’s a certain hesitation to say things about women particularly. He stated that if a woman decides to step in a political arena, and she thinks it’s appropriate to take on men and say things about them, and she receives retaliatory messages, she cannot hide behind gender.
