Bawumia Is A Threat To Mahama – Allotey Jacobs

Allotey Jacobs, former Regional Chairman of the NDC

The former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Bernard Allotey Jacobs believes Bawumia is a real threat to the National Democratic Congress’ presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama should Mahamudu Bawumia win the New Patriotic Party flagbearer race.

He said that, given the dynamics of the northern regions, Bawumia will make a significant competitor to John Dramani Mahama come 2024 general elections. “Bawumia is a threat to Mahama…even in central Tamale, for presidential, Bawumia will sweep the votes,” Allotey Jacobs said.

According to him, he believes the dynamics of the northern regions has placed Bawumia in a politically strategic position to win the national general elections in 2024. He stated that, out of the five regions in the northern part of Ghana, three are almost about 80% Muslim regions and two are about 70% Christians which, for him, is a strong advantage for the Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia.

Bernard Allotey Jacobs further argues that the homogeneous nature of the three major kingdoms in northern Ghana further plays to Vice President’s advantage. He explained that the Dagombas, Nanumbas and Mamprusis speak almost the same languages. Consequently, the support of these kingdoms for any candidate will be significant determinant in the 2024 elections, according to him.

The former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress argued further that, the northern regions are likely to massively support the candidature of Bawumia because of the recent rife in the National Democratic Congress in the removal of Haruna Iddrisu as Minority leader of the opposition caucus in parliament. This for him has birthed loyalty for Bawumia in the north.

“Even in central tamale, for presidential, Bawumia will sweep the votes with a minority NPP candidate because the NDC candidates there are so close to the people, especially Haruna Iddrisu. What has happened to Haruna has invoked loyalty for Bawumia.”

According to him, Haruna is an idol in the north. Haruna’s influence in the north is so significant that any unfair treatment either real or perceived in the past will immensely cost the National Democratic Congress fortunes of votes in the northern regions in 2024.

“Haruna is an idol. He is highly respected that what he says is final in the north. Hence his removal has infuriated the Dagombas against the NDC. “

November 4th Delegates Elections

He thus, urged the New Patriotic Party delegates to massively support Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid so as to win the national general elections in 2024 because he believes should Mahamudu Bawumia win, the northern regions will support him massively into victory. He however admitted that while his analysis centers on ethnicity, he explained that the politics at play couldn’t be ignored.

He conceded that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bawumia’s main contender is a good man and his bosom friend. He however strongly believes that the NPP stood a better chance with Bawumia in 2024 than Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. He believes Bawumia will help change the perception of the Ghanaian politics and unite the country.

He denied the school of thought that the NPP results of the super delegate elections will not reflect in the delegate votes as grassroots may differ. Notwithstanding, he cautioned the New Patriotic Party that it will have manage its parliamentary seats so it does not suffer another hung parliament.

He also entreated the parties not to allow dissent in order to maintain team spirit as they prepare for elections. Meanwhile, he cautioned those who critique their parties to do so in a way that protects the party.
