In a bold and strategic move, Democracy Hub, a leading advocacy group championing governance reforms in Ghana, has announced its participation in the upcoming non-partisan Council of State elections.
The organisation revealed plans to present and sponsor candidates in the elections, positioning this initiative as a critical step in advancing constitutional reform.
In a statement issued today, Democracy Hub emphasised its commitment to reshaping Ghana’s governance framework to better reflect the will and aspirations of the people.
“As many of you know, Democracy Hub has consistently championed bold reforms to reshape our governance structures. Critical in our proposals for constitutional remaking is the abolition of the Council of State body we believe has become ineffective in fulfilling its advisory role to the Presidency and the broader machinery of governance.”
Democracy Hub
Democracy Hub’s decision to engage in the Council of State elections reflects a pragmatic approach to governance reform. The group acknowledged that despite its advocacy for the Council’s abolition, the body currently holds a pivotal role in the constitutional amendment process.
According to the advocacy group, by law, any bill seeking to amend the Constitution must first be referred to the Council of State for consideration. This, the Democracy asserted means the composition of the Council is pivotal in determining whether constitutional reforms succeed or falter
“To ensure that the Council does not obstruct progress, Democracy Hub is participating in the upcoming elections by supporting candidates who share our vision for transformative governance. Our participation is not a contradiction of our reformist ideals. Instead, it is a pragmatic move to safeguard the path toward a better future.”

By backing leaders committed to justice, equity, and constitutional reform, the advocacy group aims to transform the Council into a force that champions the people’s interests rather than an obstacle to progress.
Non-Partisan Principles at the Forefront
The group reiterated its commitment to the non-partisan nature of the elections, stressing the need for the Council of State to function as a platform for independent thought, wisdom, and experience, rather than an extension of political party agendas.
The statement further emphasized that the Democracy Hub’s sponsored candidates have been carefully selected based on their integrity, vision, and dedication to justice, equity, and constitutional reform.
While reaffirming its ultimate goal of abolishing the Council of State as part of broader governance reform, Democracy Hub emphasized the importance of leveraging the current system to drive change.
The organization views the elections as an opportunity to transform the Council into a proactive body that champions the interests of the people and facilitates constitutional reform.
“Our involvement in this election ensures that the Council will not stand as a roadblock to progress but will instead support the Ghanaian people’s aspirations for a fairer, more accountable system of governance.”

The group urged Ghanaians to demand accountability and contribute to the collective pursuit of a better Ghana. “The time for change is now. Let us work together to make it happen,” the statement concluded.
Democracy Hub’s participation in the Council of State elections marks a significant moment in Ghana’s journey toward constitutional reform.
By strategically engaging with the existing system, the organization aims to ensure that the Council of State becomes a force for progress, paving the way for a governance framework that truly serves the people.
