The Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Commander Andy La-Anyane, has intimated that the directive to detach the four military personnel from the office of the Speaker of Parliament was given by the Ministry of Defence and not GAF.

Commenting on the issue which has attracted some concerns and backlash from the public, he explained that it was not in the power of the GAF to have requested for such a directive to be issued.

Touching on the possibility of whether the GAF is considering a possible action to solve the issue at hand, he averred that there is nothing the GAF is doing or can do about it.

“We wrote a letter based on instructions that we received from the Ministry of Defence. So, it is the responsibility of the Chief of Staff to act on directives. We wrote the letter, so I don’t know what else we can do about it.”

Commander Andy La-Anyane

The PR Director, Andy La-Anyane, described the leakage of the letter which was to be strictly between the GAF and the personnel as an unfortunate incident which shouldn’t have happened.

“We have written our letter and it came on social media and now it is everywhere.”

New leader gave directive

Commander Andy La-Anyane explaining why it took a year for the Ministry to rectify the issue of the personnel at the Speaker’s office not going through the due deployment process, intimated that it took a new leader to have given such a directive to rectify it.

“What I would say is that the Chief of staff now was not the Chief of Staff in 2021. I have read somewhere where it is being alleged that it is the same Chief of Staff who wrote for those soldiers to be attached to the Speaker’s office and the same Chief of Staff is writing to detach them because we claim they did not go through due process. This is not a fact.”

Commander Andy La-Anyane

PR Director, Andy La-Anyane, averred that even the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) at that time is not the one currently in position. Touching on whether the change will have an impact on what happens due to the change of office, Commander La-Anyane intimated that it wouldn’t.

“Let’s say if somebody does something or goes through a process and another person comes and says let make some corrections or streamline issues, I don’t think it has anything to do with anybody.”

Commander Andy La-Anyane

Commander Andy La-Anyane suggested that further clarity on the issue should be sought from the Defence Ministry in this regard.

Speaking on the process of detaching these officers from the Speaker’s office, he indicated that the details on the rectification as stated in the statement by GAF cannot be disclosed to the general public.

Commander Andy La-Anyane noted that the personnel will be replaced. He, therefore, expressed that once their attachment to the office is ready, they can still be the same staff at the Speaker’s office which is not a problem.
