The New Patriotic Party Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, has found himself at the center of a storm of criticism following his inaugural address at Jubilee Park in Manhyia, Kumasi.

Positioned as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 elections, the Manhyia South Member of Parliament’s speech according to many not only fell short of expectations but also sought to undermine the unparalleled legacy of Ghana’s founder and first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The Energy Minister’s attempt to distinguish the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and undermine Dr Nkrumah’s legacy has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters.

Prominent individuals, including Professor Ransford Gyampo, a renowned political scientist and a seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, have publicly condemned Dr Opoku Prempeh’s comment, describing it as unnecessary and detrimental.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has even gone further, calling for the Manhyia South MP to resign from all government and political positions, demanding that he retract and apologize for his statements against Dr. Nkrumah.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s controversial remarks and perceived lackluster speech in the view of critics raise deeper concerns about his readiness to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia, in their bid for victory.

Critics have also pointed to the Manhyia South’s perceived arrogance and his inability to convey a clear vision as significant obstacles that could hinder the party’s electoral prospects.

William Boadi, Executive Director of Educate Africa Institute (EAI), and political analyst weighing into the conversation emphasized the need for political mentorship for the New Patriotic Party Vice Presidential Candidate.

According to Mr. Boadi, the Manhyia South legislator’s attempt to praise President Akufo-Addo and distinguish his leadership proved futile as he struggled to articulate a compelling narrative that resonated with the audience and potential voters alike.

“Napo’s shortcomings underscore deeper concerns about his readiness to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia, in their bid for victory. Critics have pointed to Napo’s perceived arrogance and his inability to convey a clear vision as significant obstacles that could hinder the party’s electoral prospects.

“At a time when political marketing and decorum behavior are crucial for garnering public support, Napo’s stumble raises questions about his preparedness for the responsibilities of high office”.

Effective Political Communication

Mr Boadi’s critique suggests that without effective political communication and a genuine connection with the electorate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s presence on the NPP ticket could be more of a liability than an asset.

Reflecting on Ghana’s storied political history, the Executive Director of EAI indicated that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s comparisons to the towering legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah highlight the stark contrast in leadership styles and communication prowess.

He pointed out that Dr Nkrumah’s unparalleled impact on national development and his ability to inspire a nation serve as a poignant reminder of the qualities needed in today’s leaders.

He emphasized that Dr Nkrumah’s speeches were known for their clarity, vision, and ability to connect with the electorate—qualities that seem lacking in Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s recent address.

“As Ghana approaches a critical juncture in its democratic journey, the lessons from Nkrumah’s era resonate louder than ever, emphasizing the imperative for clarity, humility, and a genuine connection with the electorate.

“Whether Napo can rise to meet these standards remains uncertain, but his recent stumble underscores the urgent need for political mentorship and a refined approach to ensure the NPP’s competitiveness in the upcoming elections”.

In conclusion, the criticism of Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s speech at Jubilee Park is a wake-up call for the NPP. It highlights the need for effective political communication and the importance of connecting with the electorate.

As the 2024 elections approach, the NPP must address these issues if they hope to secure victory.
