The former deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Elizabeth Sackey, has vowed to build a “new Accra” following her confirmation by Assembly members as the first female Accra Municipal Assembly (AMA) Mayor.

Following her nomination by President Akufo-Addo as the Metropolitan Chief Executive for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Elizabeth Sackey was unanimously voted for by 33 assembly members, today, Thursday, October 7, 2021, at the AMA office.

In her acceptance speech, she lauded the achievements of her predecessors and established her resolve to work with them.

“I’d like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of previous metropolitan chief executives of this city… Their exceptional leadership over the years is what has been propelling the city to become a model city in the subregion and even globally. I will not hesitate to tap into their rich experiences and my doors are always open for advice from them. This city is endowed with numerous human and material resources that could be harnessed for the benefit of our people. There is a lot of work to be done, therefore, this is a clarion call for all to come on board so that we can achieve our goals”.

Elizabeth Sackey

Following her confirmation, the new Mayor of Accra pledged to work hand in hand with assembly members to achieve her vision for the capital.

“To my assembly members and staff of the assembly that I will be working with, I will need your unflinching support… My vision is to build [a] new Accra, a model city, whose inhabitants have a shared responsibility in making it modern. Therefore, I will require the support of everybody here for this to be a reality”.

Elizabeth Sackey

In concluding, Mrs Sackey stated that the challenges that face us are “numerous and we must realize that our journey forward in the face of all these challenges will be difficult. But with the help of God and all stakeholders, we shall overcome”.

Nomination of Elizabeth Sackey as MCE

Elizabeth Sackey was of part the list of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives released by the Minister for Local Government, Dan Botwe on Sunday, September 19, 2021. Preceding her nomination, she served as a Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North.

However, prior to the list being made public, some NPP youth in the Odododiodoo constituency of the Greater Accra Region, staged a demonstration on Saturday, September 18, 2021, to express their displeasure.

The Ghana Police Service subsequently arrested four leaders of the demonstration. The then outgoing MCE of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, later condemned and dissociated himself from the demonstration. He later urged his supporters to respect the decision of President Akufo-Addo.

Contained in a statement, Mr Sowah declared his support for whoever President Akufo-Addo nominated.

“We should recognize the President’s authority to nominate individuals of his choice to promote his agenda, and it’s our duty to support the appointees to succeed… I totally support all the President’s nominations and commit to continue to work towards the development of the country”.
