Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) has expressed optimism about expanding bauxite mining operations in Ghana.
This positive outlook follows the unanimous ratification of a mining lease by Parliament in July 2024, which grants the Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC) the rights to mine bauxite in Awaso, located in the Bibiani-Nyase-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region. The lease aims to increase bauxite production capacity while exploring additional opportunities for Ghana’s bauxite sector. Dr. Kwabena Mensah, Senior Technical Manager at GIADEC, highlighted these developments on the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (GHEITI) 2021–2022 report.
Dr. Mensah described the ratification as a significant step forward for the bauxite mining sector in Ghana. He stated that, the move by Parliament will help stimulate growth and development within the industry by expanding the scope of bauxite production. He emphasized the importance of this development for both the industry and the country’s economy.
By securing the mining lease, the Ghana Bauxite Company is poised to leverage Ghana’s rich bauxite deposits, ensuring a steady supply of the resource to meet the demands of ongoing projects such as the Integrated Aluminum Project (IAP).
Expanding Production Capacity: New Mills and Improved Equipment
In line with the increased production targets, the Ghana Bauxite Company has made significant investments to scale up its operations.
“To ensure that they can meet the quantities and the volume that we seek for the Integrated Aluminum Project, we’ve added on two more mills, the Afumba, and the Buka Hills, so that we do have enough resources to meet the new capacity that we are required to meet.”
Dr. Kwabena Mensah Senior Technical Manager at GIADEC
Moreover, the company is working on upgrading its mining strategies The aim is to adopt sustainable practices.
“They are working on improved equipment, moving away from traditional mining methods to sustainable mining means that will meet environmental requirements and other standards required of the GIADEC process.”

A critical component of the Aluminum Development Corporation’s plans is its commitment to sustainability. Dr. Mensah emphasized that sustainable mining practices are being prioritized, with a clear focus on reducing the environmental footprint associated with bauxite mining. He acknowledged that transitioning to sustainable mining will be a gradual process but reiterated the company’s dedication to achieving this goal.
According to Dr. Mensah, the approach is essential to ensuring that bauxite mining activities do not negatively impact the surrounding environment and local communities. Dr. Mensah elaborated on the measures being taken to minimize environmental damage.

Adopting Modern Mining Technologies
Moreover, one of the key innovations being introduced by the Aluminum Development Corporation is the adoption of new mining technologies that are already in use in other sectors.
“Significantly, the mining process itself is going to be improved upon using new methods that are already in play in the Amazon forest, for example, using the surface miner.”
Dr. Kwabena Mensah Senior Technical Manager at GIADEC
Dr. Mensah added that the introduction of these technologies would help reduce the adverse effects of mining while increasing efficiency and production. In addition to adopting modern technologies, the Aluminum Development Corporation is also focused on enhancing the expertise and skills of its workforce. The company has initiated training programs aimed at building the capacity of its employees to operate the new mining equipment and technologies being introduced. Dr. Mensah emphasized the importance of workforce development in achieving the company’s long-term goals, stating, “Training and bringing up the level of expertise and workforce that they have’’ The company also recognizes the importance of corporate social responsibility, particularly in terms of its relationship with local communities. Dr. Mensah noted that the company is committed to meeting its obligations to these communities, ensuring that they benefit from the bauxite mining activities in their areas.
The Aluminum Development Corporation’s efforts to increase bauxite production capacity through the addition of new mills, the adoption of sustainable mining practices, and the introduction of modern technologies demonstrate its commitment to growing Ghana’s bauxite mining sector in an environmentally responsible manner. Dr. Mensah’s remarks underscored the importance of transparency, sustainability, and corporate responsibility in the company’s operations. As the Ghana Bauxite Company moves forward with its plans, it is clear that the future of bauxite mining in Ghana will be shaped by a commitment to sustainable development and innovation.
