Abass Moro Ibrahim, the Senior Industrial Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), has dared the leadership of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and all its affiliate organizations to publicly display the reduced prices of spare parts sold in the country, most especially at Abossey Okai, which is the hub of spare parts.
Alhaji Moro’s comments come after a press conference held by the Spare Parts Dealers Association, that it has reduced the prices of spare parts in equality with the cedi’s appreciation to the dollar and the reduction of prices at the pump, thus, called on GPRTU to also do the same to bring some relief to Ghanaians.
Speaking in an interview, Alhaji Moro noted that members of GUTA must prove that they have reduced the prices of spare parts by publishing the new price list and the old price list for the public to see. He further disclosed that, it is the only way to prove they (GUTA) are living up to what they are making Ghanaians believe.
“How are we able to know they have reduced prices of the spare parts among others when they have not published them?”
Alhaji Ibrahim
According to him, the price of fuel had been increased by 473% while transport fares have increased by 67%, emphasizing that there is a deficiency. “In the wake of all these increments, we have been cushioning Ghanaians,” he added.
Alhaji Ibrahim Moro stated that, in all these scenarios, passengers still owe members of the GPRTU.
“We have shown good faith with the Ghanaian passengers in the face of the incessant fuel increments in the country.
“In any case, we have not said anywhere that if the price of spare parts is reduced we will reduce transport fares.”
Alhaji Moro
According to Alhaji Moro, fuel and spare parts are not the only components for the increment in transport fares. He indicated that the cost of oil has also gone up which is a component in the transport fare determination regime.
Spare Parts Dealers Deny Increase In Price Of Spare Parts
The Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association Denied claims by transport operators that the inability to reduce transport fares is due to the high cost of spare parts in the country.
This comes after several calls have been made on transport operators to reduce transport fares in the wake of reduced prices of fuel at the various pumps and marginal gains by the cedi on the forex market.
Despite these reliefs, transport fares have remained the same as operators blame the high cost of auto parts, but Clement Boateng, Chairman of the Abbosey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, in a statement noted that, members of the group cannot be blamed.
“They are now attributing their failure to reduce prices of transport fares to the high prices of spare parts. It is against this background that we are holding this press conference to let the Ghanaian public know that what they are saying is not true.
“Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has over the years as a tradition, always embarked on price reductions every November to help customers service their vehicles for the Christmas holidays.”

The association urged Ghanaians to disregard the propaganda that the GPRTU is waging, as it has been its tradition over the years whenever they are called upon to reduce transport fares.
“We wish to let the public know that prices of spare parts have been adjusted to respond to the appreciation of the cedi and would urge all customers to go directly to the shops and buy from.”
