15th MTN Pulse Africa Transform Summit

Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has warned fellow politicians about the consequences of ignoring the aspirations and concerns of the Ghanaian people.

Citing the recent violent protests in Kenya as a cautionary example, Iddrisu emphasized the need for the political elite to adequately address the public’s needs. He made these remarks at the 15th MTN Pulse Africa Transform Summit held in Kumasi.

Iddrisu’s speech at the summit was a clarion call to the Ghanaian political class. He stressed the importance of not underestimating the public’s dissatisfaction, warning that failure to address their concerns could lead to unrest similar to that seen in Kenya.

“I don’t want to encourage a Kenyan example in Ghana. But the political elites including me must be guided by developments in Kenya not to take the aspirations of the Ghanaian people for granted and not to take the concerns and legitimate issues of the populace for granted.”

Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South

The Tamale South MP reminded his colleagues that it is their duty to address these basic needs. He emphasized that the electorate expects them to improve infrastructure and services, which are fundamental to the country’s development. He called for a concerted effort from all political leaders to prioritize these issues and deliver on their promises to the people.

“There are many parts of this country that are still looking for good roads, they don’t have access to potable water, they don’t have access to electricity, and the educational facilities are not functioning the way they should.

“That is what you elect us to do whether as president or MPs, that is what you require us to do.”

Call to Youth and Civic Engagement

As the December 2024 general elections approach, Iddrisu also directs his message to the youth of Ghana. He encouraged them to be vocal about their concerns and to hold leaders accountable.

“If things are not right, speak up that they are not right regardless of whether it is this party or that party or this person or that person.

“You must speak out on what is good and what is right for this country because you love your country.”

Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South

The reference to Kenya is particularly poignant given the recent events there. Violent protests erupted, leading to significant unrest and instability. Iddrisu’s use of Kenya as an example serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of political negligence and the failure to address public grievances.

Haruna Iddrisu’s remarks at the MTN Pulse Africa Transform Summit underscore the critical need for Ghanaian politicians to listen to and address the needs of their constituents. By drawing parallels with the situation in Kenya, he highlighted the urgency of the matter and called for immediate action.

Haruna Iddrisu’s message was clear: to prevent unrest and ensure a stable and prosperous Ghana, the political elite must take the aspirations of the people seriously and work tirelessly to improve their lives.

The Tamale South MP’s speech serves as a powerful reminder that the role of politicians is to serve the people. As the country gears up for the 2024 general elections, it is imperative for both leaders and citizens to engage in constructive dialogue, prioritize the country’s interests, and work together toward a better future for all Ghanaians.
