Mahama Touches On The ‘Galamsey’ Report
For the first time, John Dramani Mahama, commented on the ‘Galamsey’ report, authored by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.
The report, which implicates a wide number of government officials, most of whom have denied the allegations in the report, was commented on by the former President.
Talks have heightened for an action to be taken on the report, as it gives damning verdict on the fight against illegal mining, launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017.
John Dramani Mahama, while addressing delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tanoso in the Western North Region, as part of his campaign to lead the party into next year’s elections, claimed it is now clear that those involved in illegal mining are top New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.
“This is not me saying it…It is Doctor Frimpong-Boateng, their own Minister, saying those who engage in galamsey are NPP’s top officers, some at the Jubilee House. So, since NPP came to power, our forests – which were reserved – have been allowed to be indiscriminately degraded by the government.”

He stated that formerly in past successive governments, the effects of the Harmattan were not felt in Sefwi Wiawso and Bibiani because of the protection provided by the forest reserves but “today, it looks like Tamale. When Harmattan sets in, this place is dry, there is bush fire and all that. So, [Prof Frimpong-Boateng] has admitted that they are doing the galamsey.”
Kojo Bonsu Claims Mahama Will Not Stand A Chance In 2024 Elections
However, Kojo Bonsu, the former Mayor of Kumasi, claims that corruption allegations and other things have been brought up against former President John Dramani Mahama, that cannot be erased.
In the view of Mr. Bonsu, the image of John Mahama, who is campaigning to be elected flagbearer of the NDC for the 2024 polls, has been soiled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a situation that will not make him stand a better chance in the 2024 general elections, if he wins the flagbearer election of the NDC.
Kojo Bonsu, who is also contestant for the flagbearship position of the NDC, claimed that, “they have said a lot of things about [John Mahama], they have put corruption tag on him, they have said a whole lot of things against him that you can’t even take it off…That is where I feel very sad. NPP have really soiled him, he doesn’t stand a better chance.”
However, Kojo Bonsu’s comments are contrary to the views of the former President on his strength, going into the internal elections of the NDC. Mahama had already indicated that among all the three aspirants, the mere mention of his name, frightens the NPP to the core, more than the others.
“They [NPP] are unable to sleep when they hear my name. That’s why they have been calling for a fresh person. Are you the ones to tell us what we should do? It’s none of your business, I believe God has given us the power already.”
